How's thier recruiting compared to thier peers? There probably not going head to head with the big names you mentioned..

But at the g5 level, in thier conference... Where do they stack up?

2, 1, 7, 4 the last 4 seasons he's been the HC recruiting there in conference, they oddly enough get a lot of transfers. 2020 when they finished 7th in conference they had 20 enrollees and 3 transfers (prior year it was 22/9). So they slipped a bit, but it appears to be because they had less turnover and with COVID happening that makes sense.

Also for what it's worth the 2020 class had a high enough player rating to finish 4th in conference, but a few teams ahead of them had more players enrolled so they ended up with more points. This is all pulled from the 24/7 rankings, so may vary on other websites.

The schools that seem to do as well or better are Cincinnati and Memphis. SMU also pops up high on a consistent basis, doesn't surprise me though Memphis has benefited from Vandy/UT/Miss St/Ole Miss/Ark all being bad and SMU is in Dallas, Texas.

The AAC is probably the strongest non P5 conference in the G5 too, hell they may be a better conference right now than the Pac-12 even, at least top to bottom. Ya got some solid teams in some great locations.

Houston, SMU, Memphis, Cincinnati, UCF, USF, East Carolina & Tulane are all in great states for recruiting.

Seriously what is Bob Stoops doing these days? If we missed on everyone else go make him an offer he can’t refuse. Continuing to be a bottom feeder is not an option. We are still Tennessee a few good years and everyone would forget about this downturn.

I don't understand why he wasn't at or near the top of our list.

I was perfectly willing to accept that reality before Boyd and Plowman started setting criteria for who they were gonna get. They raised everyone's hopes. That's also reality. Never let your mouth write checks your ass can't keep.
That was a huge mistake...They should have been lowering expectations from the very beginning. Now this is going to be a disaster as far as getting the fanbase behind it. People are extremely irrationally pissed off, and it is all on them.

If they had poormouthed to start with I don't think it would be anywhere near this bad of a reaction.

We should score a lot more points which is what everybody said they wanted...Heupel is a great offensive mind...that is not even arguable unless you are just a pissed off prick that refuses to see reason.

People just need to calm down. Support Heupal if he’s the guy or don’t—-the fact is all you hear from Vol fans is this delusion that if you pay these coaches they will come. It’s pretty darn near impossible to pull a sitting coach from a P5 school. On top of that we have NCAA sanctions coming—no coach wants to sign up for that sorry.

I know. I do know this.

It’s just, when you’re paying a guy 2mil per to make this hire, “sorry I failed, but it was hard” just seems unacceptable to me.

I’m sure DW in the interview sold them on the notion that he could knock this out of the park, regardless of the circumstances. Josh Heupel doesn’t fulfill that promise.

When we hired DW my buddy said it sounds like we are about to get a Big 12 QB as a coach. He kept joking that Major Applewhite was going to be the coach. Well it seems like he was right, he just picked the wrong Big 12 QB.
It would’ve been. Applewhite sucks beyond the level VN’s projecting at Heupel.

They shouldn't have set criteria they couldn't meet. It's stupid, and a sign of lingering dysfunction at the highest levels. It's not even the possible hire of Heupel that angers me. It's them pissing on my leg and telling me it's raining.
or...a statement about the condition of the program and the attractiveness of the job under the circumstances?

Feels like some have just blocked out the last month or so with just how screwed up this program got and how the last regime just ended a little over a week ago.

Not to mention the last search debacle and the decade that led up to it..

Lol... Perception is reality most of the time. Our perception of Tennessee does not match reality....

I want to preface this by saying I don’t know what the end result in this coaching search will be, but I feel so gutted for this fan base.

The previous admins have ruined this program, and the ego of our boosters have made it even worse on top of that. They diminished what was once looked at as a top 10 job in all of CFB, to arguably not even a top 10 SEC job.

This fan base deserves so much better and I think this could potentially be the final straw that breaks the camels back. It’s incredibly unfortunate because I think the admin that’s in place is the best it’s been in 15+ years. I think Danny White is an incredible AD. I think it’s unfair for people to criticize DW if he hires JH because the sad truth is JH might be the best possible candidate that’s willing to take this job at the moment.

Fulmer, Pruitt, and the rest of the wet bandits completely nuked what was left of this program. I think it can be revived with the right leadership and a competent coach, but it’s in a very bad place right now. I’m not even going to attempt to say “give it time” or “be patient” because quite frankly, I’m tired of hearing it too. The most loyal & passionate fan base in America that has invested time, energy, & money into this program has received no return on that investment.

Apathy is truly knocking at the door.

Also I'd like to point out ya really don't need a great recruiter at HC, ya need a HC who can hire great recruiters. Pruitt I think realized how little recruiting a HC really gets to do and it may be why he let things get so sloppy in that department.

I'd rather a HC that can develop talent, identify great hires and knows the Xs & Os of the game (specifically on offense) and Heupel checks those boxes. Ya hand him Steele with free reign to bring in who he wants on defense and you fill out the offensive staff (probably need a new OC since we all know Chaney is dead weight recruiting) and he could at least be the guy to stabilize and right the ship for us.

Does anyone know ER Vol from the FF? Joined in 16 and only has a few hundred messages.
In the coachery thread, they are trying to claim there is a sitting NFL guy that TN approached tonight. Said there is probably a 1% chance it happens.

He said, "One of his players came in tonight."

Kamara recently tweeted he had some ideas he wanted to discuss with DW when he was hired..

By gawd, that's Sean Payton music.

You can’t force coaches to take jobs. Heupel was as good as it was going to get. I’m not going to go through the laundry list of names but we aren’t a great job right now. I hear Freeze and Kiffin but here’s the thing: the powers that be drew that line in the sand long ago. Personally, I think bringing either one of them in would essentially be daring the NCAA to come down on us harder than they are probably going to.
