Practice #13 Observations
Tennessee was back on the practice field Thursday morning following Wednesday’s OFF day and Tuesday’s scrimmage.
Velus Jones was back getting work in after being slowed by a hamstring for much of the last week. Kaemen Marley was off to the side as usual, Trinity Bell was in the indoor doing conditioning after doing some light work with the tight ends (without pads) and Ollie Lane was off to the side with a trainer, armed with only a helmet. Tyler Baron was back in full pads.
No Brian Maurer out there on the practice field today and going forward we will not address him unless he shows back up. Additionally, I did not see Jimmy Calloway.
The offensive line was putting in some work on the two-man sled for much of individual. The group was also working its technique up field, dipping and ripping – simulating getting up to a linebacker or safety. This is what the coaches mean by creating ‘vertical lanes.’
The quarterbacks were fine today – nothing too high or low. On routes versus air, Joe Milton looked good throwing the deep ball and slants. He had one ball skip and I saw him overshoot one receiver, but overall a decent day on air for #7.
Hendon Hooker and Harrison Bailey looked fine as well. It’s evident Bailey is third when it comes to throwing the deep ball, but the order today was Milton, Bailey and then Hooker. The wideouts were working a combination of routes that included posts, seams, hitches and slant and go’s.
One drop I noticed came from Andison Coby on a Milton slant. The pass was low but Coby got enough on it to where it should have been caught.
While walking off the field, the offense was going on the ball, hurry up inside run from the 20-yard line out. The offense looked like so: Milton, Evans, Warren, Hyatt, Tillman, Payton, Wright, Carvin, Mays, Spraggins and Mays.
Defensively, it was tackling circuits to start things off. Sideline tackling, angle tackling and open field tackling was the emphasis. I thought Juwan Mitchell and Jeremy Banks looked smooth going through the schute.
The coaches were very vocal with encouragement – trying to get the team going early following an OFF day. Rodney Garner was as you’d imagine, extremely expressive and having groups redo reps on a couple of occasion.
It’s a staggered morning for us. Willie Martinez meets with the media at 10:50. Juwan Mitchell, Solon Page and Roman Harrison to check in at 11:50.
