Last week in a media availability interview Nigel Warrior was asked about playing special teams. He stressed the importance of special teams and their contribution to “Hidden Yardage” He went on to chide the media members present by saying, “ya’ll don’t know what that is do you?”
In the Bill Parcells’ theory of hidden yardage every 100 yards gained via a combination of punt returns, kickoff returns, interception returns, fumble returns, and penalties is worth 7 points and any fraction of 100 yards is prorated. Thus if in the course of a game a team had 70 yards in hidden yardage it would be worth 0.7*7 = 4.9 points.
The chart below illustrates the importance of field position by establishing the historical probabilities across all games/teams for a drive ending in a score from a given position on the field. Ideally we want to play the entire game on our opponent's side of the field.

General Neyland's 7 Maxims
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.
