Yikes. I recently went to a leadership retreat, and the instructor was telling a story about being approached and asked to help an SEC soccer team (didn’t name it). The coach wanted advice because he said the players didn’t communicate, were unmotivated, and didn’t play as a team. The instructor had the team do a blind survey to critique the coaching staff, and the results were that the staff did not communicate, were unmotivated, and didn’t work as a team.
Leadership breeds motivation, accountability, and commitment. Sure, poor execution can be a player problem, but ultimately, the coach is responsible for his/her team.
