Just some notes on the game –
It’s common knowledge that Florida still has a lot of “blue chips” on their roster. What may be less well known is that of the 41 blue chips listed on their 3-deep, 28 are on the defensive side of the ball. Only 13 check in on the offensive side. Six of the starters on offense were “blue chips”; the rest are down the depth chart. Nine of their starters on defense were “blue chips” and the rest are backups. Florida’s starters on both sides of the ball tend towards upperclassmen. On defense, especially, the bulk of the backups are extremely young.
They say that football is about execution and execution is about winning one-on-one matchups. I watched the first half of the Georgia-South Carolina game and what struck me was how common Georgia’s offense was but how totally ineffective South Carolina was in disrupting Georgia’s execution. Maybe a lot of that can be attributed to Georgia with a significant talent advantage winning most of their one-on-one matchups but I sensed it was at least somewhat attributable to better coaching on the Georgia side. Their players are well drilled.
In order to execute as a unit and at a high level I think you need a lot of rehearsal. Included in that rehearsal is good direction and subsequent understanding by the players. To me Georgia looked really simple but executed at a pretty high level. I think that is one of the key strengths of our team, especially this year, and more so on defense than last year.
Right now I think the ability to execute hasn’t been very high with Florida, really on either side of the ball. They have some talent and fortunately for them against both Utah and USF they’ve been able to make individual plays that have impacted the outcome of those games. That’s the benefit of talent. In my book the more talent a team has the more playmakers but elite teams don’t just rely on playmakers; they rely on all 11 men executing as a unit. We made a lot of plays on defense last year, set a school record for TFLs, etc., but as a unit struggled in our performance against better teams, specifically teams with top performing QBs.
Aside from practices and scrimmages we’ve had 16 full dress rehearsals going into the game Saturday; Florida has had 3. Everything else being equal we should have the advantage in execution, in every phase of the game.
There was some talk that the “experts” on SECN had suggested that Florida’s best chance in the game was to out-talent us. Well they don’t really have a talent advantage on offense so that’s not likely a good strategy. Our offensive scheme and playcalling will likely nullify to some degree their talent advantage on defense and their lack of upperclassmen for defensive depth may also play a factor as the game winds towards the 4th quarter.
If Florida had any advantage on offense I’d think it would likely be at RB but our defensive front this year is playing much more sound than last year, especially as it relates to maintaining gap integrity. Of course any comparison of performance so far this year has to consider the strength of the opponents but we are 11th in the nation AGAINST explosive run plays; Florida is 109th. That’s not about talent; that’s about execution.
Our offense is 10th best in the nation at generating explosive pass plays; Florida is 105th. We’ve given up 8 explosive pass plays on the year and Florida has given up 7. We’ve generated 14 explosive run plays and Florida has generated 20.
We’re 11th best in the nation on 3rd down defense; Florida is 117th.
Anthony Richardson said this week that he’s trying something new. He’s started watching film with his receivers. Hooker has been doing that the entire offseason which reinforces my claim that our development and preparation is very much ahead of where Florida is at – and where we were at this time last year.
Both the computers (FPI, SP+, and Sagarin) and the humans (Vegas) are calling this matchup a 2 score game in our favor. Those computers and bookies are certainly factoring in strength of schedule to date.
One other point some may be interested in is that Hooker was asked on Monday what he did in mentally preparing for a game. He said he listens to gospel music and named some of his favorite artists. He said he and Milton share a devotional every day. That struck me as probably a pretty good way to keep one's self grounded with all the hype and noise going on around you. jmo.
