You should check out some histories on the revolutions of 1848. That season laid the foundation for WWI. Some good studies out there.

Also, Tuchman’s Guns of August is kind of the gold standard for WWI. If you haven’t read it, start there.

$10 buys a round trip bus ride from your front steps to within a stones throw of gate 22.

Priscilla Robertson - Revolutions of 1848: a Social History. It’s good stuff. Heavy on Central Europe but also reaches into the Balkans, which is important for WWI and II.

The Balkans are important because the same nonsense you see in the 19th and 20th centuries, you see today in the Ukraine. Russian/Slavic meddling to create a situation where Russia has to “protect” Slavic nations.

I used to think that, but I have started thinking that idea is overblown...I do think that maybe the average man did, but I think the military men, especially the ones who had observed the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, and the Franco-Prussian war and US Civil War before that, those dudes knew exactly what kind of meat grinder they were sending their soldiers into....and didn't care.

Oh yeah. The smart ones knew what was coming. But the public didn’t. And some in military/political leadership were familiar with what had happened in other conflicts, but they were convinced it would be different with this war.

They learned quickly. But once it started it was too late.

Solzhenitsyn’s 1914 is a great novel.
