I understand there would be growing pains for Tee if he became head coach right now. Those against it though seem to agree he would/could be a viable option after some more seasoning.
So my question is which scenario is it easier for Tee to be successful in. A) he is announced tomorrow
Or B) he has 3 years of success at a smaller school, and takes over a UT team coming off of 4 straight losing seasons.
Sooner the better. You really don't know what he will be doing in 4 years. Surround him with a great staff and recruit their brains out. If Tee doesn't work out fine... You gave him the chance and maybe UT will be held in higher esteem around the country. Right now... we're a circus. Above all else, he will repair the VFL program that Butch just **** on. Plus the guy is available, you don't extend an offer, you may burn a bridge with him.
Tee is awesome, but hes a risky hire. Hes never been a head coach, which means hes never hired or fired other coaches, never made tough roster decisions, never had sole responsibility for on-field decisions, and never had to do all of the other things (meet with boosters, take care of the academic side of things, ensure compliance) that a head coach has to do.
Yes, it worked out for Clemson with Dabo and Tennessee with Fulmer. Do you know what both of those guys had in common? They were already on staff at schools with winning records and stable rosters. Swinney kept five coaches off of his 2008 roster in 2009 all of them had relationships with current players and recruits. He knew how the AD worked, who was in charge of S&C and academics, and everything there was to know about the roster.
Thats not what Tee would be stepping into. If you love the guy, you should want him to be set up for success can any of us say that the current UT football situation sets him up for success?
Let Tee make mistakes at a G5 school without the scrutiny and pressure of Knoxville. Hire Brohm, Morris, or even Charlie Strong to recruit and dig us out of the current mess. Evict Currie from his corner office and send him to the Body Farm to clean forensic gear with a toothbrush.
Bring back Tee when we have more to offer him than hopes and dreams.
What an insult and slap in the face to Tee if Kevin Steele is interviewed and offered the job before him.
This is absolutely logical if you didn't have an incompetent AD that has poisoned the waters with every coach in the USA.
We are not getting Brohm, Morris or Strong. I'm pretty sure the word among coaches is that the UT job is career suicide with the disfunction going on there.
Tee is the only one probably brave enough to take on this hot mess. I think. Heck, I'm 49% sure he'd turn us down too.
Turn out the lights the party's over....
