Gonna have to be the guy who rains on the parade. I think they picked up the recruitment of OrTre because they missed on the top receiver in Florida (James Robinson maybe?). Maybe HG could bring some info about that though because I'm totally basing this on recent crystal balls

I think you're right. Robinson was thought to be locked up to Clemson for some time and I think he's a Gator now.

Still think Clemson is less confident about Tee.

I'm a little concerned about the depth at running back. I heard this being discussed on one of the radio shows. With Young's status so much in doubt, I'm wondering if there any RB options that might be available for this year. Does anyone know if there is someone out there who might be an option? Can a JUCO kid come as soon as this summer?

We should raise expectations, not temper them. We have the most experienced, quality talent we've had in more than a decade. We have the most returning starters in the SEC and a stable coaching staff, with key upgrades, entering Year 4. We have an elite RB and a skilled dual-threat QB who are among the best in the SEC. Our backfield is strong, our return guys are the best in the country, our D will be stellar, and we have talent all over the field. If this team, with all this talent, can't get to the SECCG-- and hopefully beyond-- then when?

Cam Sutton, JRM and Kamara returned for their senior season to help the Vols win championships. They believe they can do what they came here to do. Fans should, too.

Yep, the return of the underclassmen plus the Shoop hire has put my expectations over the top for this team. UT hasn't had a top 25 defense since 2009, Shoop has had a top 25 defense the last 5 seasons working with far less talent than he has this year. This team is a national title contender.

Anybody hear Barrett Sallee finally snap regarding the "Tennessee are perpetual offseason champions" narrative? Went so far as to call people who believe that idiots. It was glorious.

Living in GA I hear this annual preseason champions thing a lot. I have no idea where people are getting this from. 3 years ago si.com predicted us at 3-9, two years ago we were picked 5th in the East behind UGA, UF, USCJr, and Mizzou. Last year we were picked anywhere from 2nd to 5th. The most frustrating thing is that I hear the preseason champion thing most from UGA fans when they have literally been picked to win the East the last three years and have failed to do so.

Lol rb is our best position. OT and DT should be your concerns

We may be deeper at RB than anyone in the conference. Our top 3 are legit.

I'll say why our expectations aren't as high as they should be. The last 7-10 years everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong. I think some of us are still just waiting on the next bad thing to happen. The good news, however, is it seems our players and coaches are out of that mindset which is all that matters. I think this team can win 10-11 games but I'm nearly scared to even say it.

Otherwise known as Battered Vol Syndrome..it's a real disease with doctors and medicine and stuff. It is a persistent and deadly killer of orange colored hopes and dreams, and can lead to permanent and severe paranoia and obsessive worrying (see my recent posts regarding recruiting as example)

These dawgie fans went from considering Reverend Richt the greatest holiest man in coaching to a washed up backslider.
And, now they have a new hero that will catapult them to national titles every year.
Gag.

Looking back, I find it pretty damn funny and ironic that one of Dooley's best games (perhaps the best game of his career) at Tennessee happened to come against Butch Jones and his Cincinnati team. They weren't ranked when the Vols played them, but they finished the season in the top 25. NC State finished 7-6 in 2012, and that was really his only other decent win aside from Kentucky in 2010.

I wonder at what point Butch realized that the Tennessee job might come open and that he might be able to get it. I'm sure being in Neyland made an impression on him that day. I'd say by mid-season 2012, he realized that A) Dooley was a goner (probably well known in coaching circles) and B) the Vols wouldn't be able to hire a "name brand" coach due to the state of the program, thus opening the door for someone like him.

Or, of course, Butch totally lied about Tennessee being his dream job and never gave the Vols a second thought and was ready to head to Purdue or Colorado until the day Charlie Strong turned down Dave Hart.

The hand-wringing by some around here about the 40 yard dash times of recruits we're pursuing at an Opening camp is laughable. Those times are notoriously unreliable for a number of reasons (chief among them that most high school kids are bad at running 40 yard dashes and bad form gives a bad time).

Just for reference, here are some guys we'll see drafted tonight or tomorrow, their 40 times at Nike camps, and the times they ran at the combine (in parentheses).

Eli Apple: 4.63 (4.40)
Derrick Henry: 4.72 (4.54)
Jalen Ramsey 4.54 (4.45)
Darron Lee 4.68 (4.47)

So yeah, no need to freak out because Higgins ran a 4.7. The times at the opening aren't nearly as important as how kids do in drills (unless you're D4H and you need some sort of evidence to validate a bad eval on Jalen Tabor) :)
