So we are potentially losing all of

Thig
Debord
Azzanni
Strip
Martinez
Mahoney
Sheridan

That's a LOT of new faces and ideas and philosophy

Thig: has he done much? He's recruited OK but nothing special otherwise. I think we can upgrade.

Debord: Everyone knows how I feel about debord. I appreciate his time here but we can do much better. Question is, will Butch upgrade or play it safe? Appears he's going the safe route.

Azzani: I have mixed feelings here. In the past, I thought he was a weakness. I think of all the staff members, he's improved the most from a development standpoint. His recruiting has been very good. Can we upgrade? Maybe.

Strip: love coach Strip. If he does step away I hope he stays on in an administrative role. Get another quality DL coach in Hoke and it's a win.

Martinez: I think we can hire a replacement at Walmart and upgrade. In this game if you're not a good developer, you better be a dang good recruiter. He is neither. We can upgrade here and see immediate dividends.

Mahoney: Do I even need to cover this one?

Sheridan: We need a QB developer, not a QB quality assistant, or whatever he was. Butch didn't think he was worthy of a full time assistant position so that tells me all I need to know. With the right hire, this will be a huge aspect both from a development standpoint and a recruiting standpoint.

All my opinion.

Wednesday morning notes...

"Coaches are heading back on the road as the recruiting dead period ends.

With Tennessee down a staff member due to Mike DeBord's departure to Indiana, head coach Butch Jones is putting quality control assistant Walt Wells on the road to give Tennessee a full compliment of coaches on the trail.

Wells has a relationship with defensive end LaBryan Ray as well as Trey Smith and K'Rojhn Calbert. Add in the departure of Nick Sheridan, who went on the road the last time Tennessee was looking to fill a void on the offensive side, and Wells was the logical choice.

Tennessee will make some recruiting stops the next 48 hours before hosting a dozen or so visitors this weekend.

The Vols are expected to host commitments – Maleik Gray, Terrell Bailey, Ty Chandler, Eric Crosby, Theo Jackson, Jordan Murphy, we believe Kivon Bennett, and Trey Coleman will visit this weekend as well.

In terms of non-committed players, Elijah Conliffe, LaBryan Ray, Ryan Thaxton all confirmed to us they will be here this weekend and we think Josh Palmer will be here as well.

We believe the list could change over the next day or so.

On the coaching front, we are chasing chatter that Jones will have a candidate in town maybe today to interview.

On Tuesday, Jones and the staff entertained Wes Welker, as the NFL receiver who played with Peyton Manning in Denver and Tom Brady in New England, is interested in getting into coaching. He made the trip over from the coaches convention in Nashville and talked with Tennessee about possibly having a quality control position. We understand that Welker is also in play for a potential staff spot with West Virginia."

They aren't jumping off if they are being replaced with better coaches

Replacing an oc with someone who has never called plays before is better?
Bringing in a qb coach who hasn't really ever recruited is better?
Bringing in a failed hc to replace your best defensive coach is better?
Losing one of your best recruiters is better?
Possibly bringing in a wr coach with zero coaching experience is better?

Come on now open your eyes when we are sitting at 5-6 playing vandy for bowl eligibility again you agree with me

I bet you were one that b1tch@d about: DeBord and play calling .... And not having a real QB coach....About our LB play....

What does failing as a HC have to do with coaching one position?

Everyone has said Welker is coming as a QC.

Ignorance is bliss...love how you pick and choose with your comparisons.
Having a qb coach over not having one is an improvement.
Hoke as a dl coach is right up there with Stripling..not sure what him failing as a head coach has to do with being a well recognized dl coach.

What does losing a better recruiting coach have to do with this upcoming season? Maybe just something else you want to ***** and moan about.
Finally its been said numerous times that Welker is being looked as a quality control coach....just to help out the small minded folks...thats not the wr coach...he helps out the wr coach in drills and administrative duties..

Depends on how bad the new ad botches the hire after butch falls flat on his face

Dude, with all your posts I have to ask: Who pissed in your Wheaties?

Did your wife leave you, your dog bite you, and your mother claim to never have any children? If not, leave your negativity elsewhere. VN has no time for it.

Works differently. QBs aren't calling plays. They switch off to a different option depending on what the defense presents. Can't ask one man's mind to adjust all the nuances in an average snap AND formulate the gameplan AND teach that to the whole offensive unit. Manning was genius at mastering the offense and working individually with the units. OC has a different set of responsibilities. Tee Martin never went as far as Peyton in that aspect which is why some still feel that approach was more conducive to winning the NC in college. Tee was freer to just take the call and execute. Peyton by his senior year could get a little insufferable with the audibles.

He did it in the pros though. For years at that with GOAT level success. Peyton is a complete different level of football mind. IMO

It morphed into something different at Indy. Tom Moore would send in a set of plays and personnel and Peyton would work with that. More towards his third season. This veered away from the original point about Tee Martin. Tee didn't have previous play calling experience.

If Thig is gone what are some names of a replacement?

EDIT: let me rephrase that question. Who does butch know that can coach LBs?

I have some respect for some negavols because I know that they are fans and hope that they are wrong. I get the feeling that you would rather be proven right and really have us go 6-6, than you would have to admit that you are wrong (as you may well be) and have us go 10-2.
