It's not about the cost, it's about fans tired of going over there and watching them get their brains beat in. Watching opposing fans take over the stadium. It's simply not fun for many fans.

Fan base is always full of hope early in the season too. Chilly weather and a bad beaten down team (plus a decade of suck) and a non marquee opponent isn’t a good combo for getting butts in seats.

Everyone has a breaking point. I do think Vol fans were loyal for a longer period of sucktitude than most other fan bases would tolerate, though.
