The Vols convincing win over Utah State raised a few eyebrows around the college football world, with many analysts expecting TN to fall to the Aggies. Sure, it wasn't like a win over Alabama, but such a dominant victory has many thinking the team could be "back", sooner than later. Six days later, the Vols will play host to Arkansas State:

Keys to Victory:

1. Offensive Growth: The offense was really "hit or miss" against US. The offensive line has another opportunity to tune-up before we get into the meat of the schedule, and they need it. TN was ineffective running the ball, and the wide receivers had some trouble with separation, though an accurate Worley did not seem to care. We need to see a better, rounded performance, or teams will begin to key in on the passing game, making things miserable. Arkansas State has a talented group of linebackers and secondary, but they should not be able to match the talent of TN.

2. Let-down watch: Can you possibly have a let down during the second week of the season, after beating a Mountain West opponent? Probably not, but the environment will not be nearly as awesome as it was Sunday night, with an early kick-off, and many fans and players looking forward to a showdown with Oklahoma. I expect Butch will not allow them to come in unfocused, but it bears watching.

3. Key on the run: Arkansas State has a pretty good running back (Gordon) who is averaging over 6 YPC in his career. On top of this, they feature another running quarterback, who picked up 104 yards on 15 rushes last week. Was Chuckie Keeton really hampered by his knee, or was the TN defense that good? This week should answer that question.

4. Special(er) teams: I'm ready to see some returns. TN did not get a chance to return a punt last week, and only two kick-offs. While it may not be a "key to victory", I'd like to see some action here... ok, maybe one kick-off return is enough, but I'd like to see lots of punt returns. :)

5. 3rd downs: We need to win this battle. TN was 8-18 on 3rd downs. The key to sustainable drives is Worley getting in a rhythm with the short passing game, and the offensive line needs to keep people out of his face. Last week, Arkansas State did about the same with their 3rd down conversions (7-16), having to settle for field goals twice in the red zone. The defense needs to continue to be strong on 3rds, and we need to keep drives sustained. If we do this, we will wear down their defense, like Utah State began to break down.

Final Score Prediction: I was conservative last week in my prediction. Those first games are always difficult to predict, and the Vols surpassed my projection for the game.

I think the offense will continue to have some issues. Some of the problems we saw Sunday night are not things that can be fixed in 4 days of practice. I expect the defense to show improvement. Ultimately, this team is better than Arkansas State, and it will show on Saturday night.

Second :)

Also, I expected a blowout last week and came very short still so I'm going to go for a big spread this week. I'm going to call it at 45-10. I think that sole touchdown will either be gained on us early in the game or we will be flirting with a goose egg for our defense yet again.

If we don't win this game big, the only explanation is that I am a good luck charm in the stadium. If this is true, we will win the Florida game due to me being there.

I don't get the "hit or miss reference" about the offense. Worley came out in the second half and completed 13 consecutive passes (4th best all time). We kept the play book fairly basic, but I believe we have enough evidence to say the passing attack can click. We were content to take the win and run into a stacked box on defense.:clapping:

I want to see the run game get going this week and improved OL play. I think we will play well but have a slight let up in defense. I'll say 37-20.

On their site they keep talking about how well they played against a FCS team. LOL.

We are much more talented than them and should have no problem as long as we don't overlook them and play disciplined football.

Worley did very well in the 2nd half, but the offense, especially in the first half, was not that hot. Other supporting facts.

1. We punted a total of 8 times
2. Only 3 drives of 8 plays or more.
3. Between 7:32 in the 1st quarter, and 6:03 in the 2nd quarter (over a whole quarter of football), we amassed 4 punts, a missed field goal, and 93 yards of offense on 5 possessions.

The offense was hit or miss, IMO

And their best one was out the second half, when we had our best offensive showing. That is not a coincidence. I'm not a negavol, but our offense was not very good until fackrell left the game. I'm not going to say we'll be fine, after what I saw. I think our line needs to get good quick. I saw them on their backs too many times against a much lesser opponent.

AR St. is a solid team for their conference that will give our D some more reps against tempo. They go fast and have a pretty good QB in Knighten, but overall our talent should consume them. Hopefully, we can get some more reps running the ball with Worley's success passing the ball. Maybe it is another game to get out offense in gear, get additional reps for the young guys, we suffer no injuries, and it is a similar result to this week. I think 37-10.

I don't know what was more shocking, the performance against USU or actually getting people to use your pregame thread as the game thread.

On a more football-related note, I think a lot of people are underestimating USU's front seven. We'll definitely find out as the season goes on, but I have a feeling our rushing issues weren't solely due to our OL.

(Sidenote: It's funny in a really sad way that just a couple years ago a 100+ yard rushing performance would be considered a good week. We would end up with negative total rushing yards on bad weeks.)

Mock, man I didn't realize it but I was sitting right behind you and your girl at the USU game. I was there with my girlfriend. She was wearing her A.J. Johnson jersey. We had quite a few conversations and high-fives together if memory serves me right!

I look at it as if we just hit a dry spell halfway through the 1st quarter that basically lasted to halftime.

BTW, mega props to the coaches for halftime adjustments. The offense came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. D kept the USU offense down too.

Well damn, so I was actually able to meet a fellow VN-er! Yeah we talked quite a bit, if I remember correctly Peterman scares the religion out of you. I should have known that you used VN with how intimately you knew our roster and last recruiting class.

My concern is our OTs when the elite pass rushers like UGA's Floyd come off the edge. I don't believe Blair even played in garbage time. Could be wrong, but I didn't see him.

Have to be able to run the football more effectively especially when we get into the meat of the schedule. I'm not discouraged by our OL but not encouraged either. We have to get better here.

And I realize you don't want to open up the play book in game one, but the play calling is awful conservative, going back to last season.

At least one of the sacks in the last game came right past the center. I saw him get pushed on straight back onto his ass in two other separate plays. I'm worried about the whole line! I'm hoping it was just some rookie rust, and I did see a lot of good line play too. I've watched the game three times, once live in Neyland and twice on my DVR, and I'm unsure about the OL. I can tell they're capable of playing well, but will they play to their capabilities consistently? We false started twice in a row! That kind of bone-headed stuff is avoidable.

Hopefully some time together in games will help clean some of that up.

Jake tried the same slow developing run plays last season - they didn't work then and they will not work now. When he shifted later in the season to quicker hitting and stretch plays the run game got better. Butch needs to give him a direct message to get it done. There needs to be a few "go to" run plays working before Okie. Not going to be able fool them anyway. Do the stuff you do well and get better at the execution.
