Good afternoon all. I have seen a lot of discussion posted in the Recruiting forum about the direction and status of recruiting for the football program. I would like to get VolNation's input on where you think we finish in recruiting rankings for 2011 and 2012. I will start things off and we can run with the discussion...

UT recruiting class Finishing position
2011 Top 15
2012 Top 5

I think with the late start for 2011 the staff is starting to gain momentum for the future. Your thoughts???

As long as our class is ranked, I am not too worried about where. We just need to be bringing in quality guys that can contribute and perform. I don't care whether they are well-known or what stars they have.

You are true in the staff started late in 2011 after spending several months sorting through the 2010 mess that Kiffin left behind. So all in all we have made great progress with the 2011 and have secured TOP quality athletes! I think opportunity abounds for recruits looking at Tennessee with the rebuilding and the new coaching staff. It's something all smart recruits and their families should be looking at. Opportunity to play early in the SEC with a nationally known program that has a history of producing NFL athletes and a history of many bowl games and televised games. It's big time college football here at UT and recruits will weigh in on all of this.

We will end in the TOP 10 for both 2011 and 2012.

As long as we finish top 10 i could care less. Not much difference between having a #1 or #10. That's when coaching comes into play.

I dont think it matters a lot. We are ranked in the top 25 on most sites. And I think that top 15 is probably as good as we can expect this season. However, two top 10s and a top 15 in a row is outstanding.

What I think is funny is that not even a month ago, there were a lot of posters on here saying that we werent doing recruiting very well and basically talking a bunch of nonsense, now a month later, we are in the top 25 a few recruits later and everyone is rejoicing.

NegaVols strike again. A bunch of us kept saying, give it time, things will happen... etc,etc

Things will continue to happen, there is a lot to get excited about with this football team as far as the future's concerned and I really think that we are going to continue to entice good players to come here.

You get a bunch of 3 stars, some of them will mature into 5 stars, (Percy Harvin was a 3 star coming into college and so were so many other great players over the years, he is just the example that comes to mind.) Then you pull in a few 4s and a couple 5s, so they are ready right away to help the team, sometimes, and you build a good depth chart off of that over a couple of years.

If we keep this class and add a few more 3s and 4s, maybe a 5 or two, we will be in the top 10-15, after doing that 3 times in a row, we should finally have some depth going into next season, and so on.

Meaning we can really look forward to next couple of years being a lot better than the previous.

Sorry for the length, but every once in a while, a man's gotta let some air out against all of the haters in the world, especially the ones who are wearing his same colors and pretend to be part of his team...

A couple of guys are almost definitely going to raise in the rankings for this year, 2011 is almost a lock for top 15.....2012 should give our staff enough time to build those relationships and show what we are going to be on the field.

As long as we are getting quality athletes to fill our needs, we will be fine. Why get all hung up on the stars? Right now, I would have taken a solid 3-4 star DT in last years recruiting class instead of Bryce Brown! That would have hurt our ranking, but it would have made us a better team! We need players that are going to committ to Tennessee, stay in school, and work hard to develop into a quality player over 4 years!

Athletic ability is always a premium, but there is much more to building a program that will produce teams that will compete for championships!!!

Percy was ranked the #1 player out of high school. Top 10 classes are nice, but when you look to see how our competition are doing you see they are pulling top 5 classes.

My guess is the rankings will be a little lower both years--top 20 this year, maybe top 15 next year. However, the quality of kids will be a little better and there will be substantially less attrition. The biggest obstacle for this program over the last ten years has not been a lack of recruiting prowess, it has been keeping those kids in school and on the team.

With our staff of good coaches and the pace we are on now, I don't see anything holding us back in the future.

I don't expect anything lower than 15th in the future with this staff. No BS.

Our competition have stable coaching staffs in place. Our coaching staff has been on the job for 9 months.Give it time. The one thing Lane Kiffin said that made sense is "recruiting is about relationships".Our staff is doing that pretty well right now considering what happened with the coaching change.Go VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Top 25

it will be harder to sell playing time by 2012 as depth should be back so I think the ranking might slip a bit - hopefully we will start to win again so we don't have to pitch PT

Aren't you getting tired of all the "NegaVol" insults from the silly Joel Olteen following, "don't be negative, be positive" la la land fans? Dooley has allot of work to do pretty fast in recruiting, if the program is going to improve. It is neither negative or positive, it just is. Maybe the people they call "NegaVols" are the true Vols... the ones who expect nothing less than EXCELLENCE. Excellence is what UT is supposed to be about. That, of course, includes recruiting, and Dooley isn't close to it yet in recruiting.

I would predict the recruiting classes, but with the way my ability to predict has looked lately via pick 'em and "pick the score" entries it would just be a waste of time.

If you recall after Lame exited...we fell off to the mid-teens in the rankings and Dooley went out and managed to pull in several guys that weren't even considering UT before and got us back to the top 10....there's nothing to say that it can't or won't be done again so knocking CDD on his recruiting is premature considering this first full year isnt even over yet.

Everyone needs to erase this whole recruiting rankings nonsense from their heads. I've bought into it myself, but the truth is that the only way to evaluate a class is to look at it in hindisght 3-5 years down the road and see how it's performed. Fulmer's 2008 squad included two top 5 classes and went 5-7. The priority for recruiting needs to be as follows:

1. Will qualify academically.
2. Has been fully evaluated by the coaching staff and judged to have the physical and mental attributes necessary to play the position(s) for which he is recruited. This includes things like speed, height, coordination and coachability.
3. Is capable of playing at a position of need as determined by the likely depth chart for the next 2-3 years. If you cannot get All Americans for all positions of need, then you take who you can get.
4. Only after all positions of need are addressed, look at extra playmakers who meet #1 and may or may not meet #2 but who have certain intanglibles that might make them the kind of player that can make a game breaking play. This is your slow but tall WRs. Your undersized backs who have alot of shiftiness. The tweener types.
5. When you cannot get anyone to sign who meets 1-3 or 1&4 and you still have scholarships left, then you start looking at the crapshoots. Kids with issues but who have God-given talent to light up a field.
