Recruiting In General

If you think about early commitments a minute, it only makes sense that UT would lag behind FL and GA in this category.

It has already been discussed on this site how the states of FL & GA produce a greater number of D1 atheletes than TN does. The law of averages would mean that these 2 states wold have more highly rated players than TN would.

I would ASSUME most early commitments are made by players who have followed a team since they were a kid and when the opportunity to play for that school comes, they jump on it.

If you look at FL - they have 11 early commits, 8 are from FL. Of those 11, they have 7 - 4* players and 5 of those are from FL

GA has 7 earlies with 5 from GA. they have 4 - 4* players and 3 are from GA

UT has 8 with 5 from TN. The only 4* is from out of state.
With fewer star players in this area, there are a lot more teams recruiting the ones that are there and Ut is also forced to cover the country to make up the difference. This tends to take a little longer and probably why you always hear "Tennessee always closes with a big finish in recruiting"
Just my $0.02 worth.

Wow, a post with some insightful common sense. Well said.

Look at all the National Championships Nebraska won with average recruiting. Look at all the Nat. Champ. FSU has not won with No. 1 classes. Auburn has only lost one SEC game in the past 2 years and if the kicker hadn't missed 5 FG's it would be 0, and they don't recruit like other SEC schools.

2002: #6 class
2003: #11 class
2004: #21 class
2005: #13 class
2006: #10 class

That would be Auburn.

Here is Tennessee:

2002: #2 class
2003: #18 class
2004: #11 class
2005: #4 class
2006: #23

Avg class: Auburn 12.2, Tennessee 11.6

Not much disparity.

I love how so many UT "fans" now want the rest of us to accept that we are just destined to be mediocre becasue of circumstances beyong the control of any human. Put the right person in the driver's seat and we'll be back on track in no time.

There are many who can drive. What it is about is the driver having the ability to put the right people on the right bus and in the right seat. Now we should never have to settle for mediocrity at UT but we do have to face the fact, that we are in arguable the toughest conference in the nation, and then that the east has at least 3 and if South Carolina turns out to be for real 4 teams that can bring a quality program into any season or game. With this competition, it will be hard for anyone in the SEC to still be in line for a National title. Now we should be able to compete for the SEC title every year, and what is so bad about just being the SEC Champions. Why is it we think every year we have to be the National champions, to have a great year? Sure I hope every year are there in line for the NC, but let’s get the SEC first.

I think most of us who have been critical of Fulmer have made it quite clear our main complaint is the failure to win the SEC in seven seasons. I don't think the National Champioship is required for a great season. As '98 showed, there are a million variables that have to break just right in order to win it all. However, going seven years without an SEC title at UT is totally unacceptable.

I agree 7 years without an SEC title is too long. But we made it to the title game twice since then and I think once you get to the title game that it is more up to the players than the coaches to win that game. Each team has played 11 games by that time and everyone knows what the other team is all about, I think it is all about who wants it more, or in the 2004 game I think Auburn was just flat out better than us. Also, in a way I care more about winning the SEC title than a NC, don't get me wrong I am happy to have the 98 title. But I still think the NC in college football is still a mythical title whereas the conference title is a legitmate win it on the field title, polls mean nothing. Does anyone get my drift on this point or am I the only one that feels that way.

Creer: Certainly, yes. Actually talks about UTK as much, if not more, than any other school.
Allen: Not too sure.

There are a number of other highly regarded RB's we are still involved with. Not sure if we will land one, but we will be in the position to come closer to signing day.
