In reality we're tied for 4th place. The 5 SEC teams behind Texas, Georgia, and Alabama are very close in terms of overall points. The way to look at recruiting is in tiers not the absolute rankings. Because two teams can be close in the rankings but the two classes could be far apart in terms of actual points.
Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon are on one tier. They're recruiting a step above everyone else. Then you have Michigan, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Miami that are on the next tier.
If we want to move from playoff contender to national championship contender then we have to find a way to start recruiting at the 1-5 range rather than the 10-15 range. Right now the only true national title contenders are Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon because they're the only teams consistently in the top 5.
