Cowherd just said that the NCAA is investigating UM for possible recruiting violations. He also said it just came over the wire and I can't find a link. Anyone know anything about this?

From a Gator message board...

jamie McCloskey is looking into the recruitment of Carl Moore and his gf, a gymnast who transferred to UF from the same community college Moore came from. Potentially a secondary violation at most.

I'm sure the NCAA will immediately give the death penalty to the Florida gymanstics team.

Apparently it involves Meyer having conversations with the girlfriend of someone he was recruiting from a junior college.

Whatever.

absolutely shocking response.

Why? To me its like the whole nonsensical texting thing. There's no claim Meyer paid him off or offered him anything or promised him anything he shouldn't. So he sweet-talked the guy's girlfriend and sold her on coming to UF, too.

I mean, honestly, what's the big deal?

I don't disagree with you, I'm just saying that your response was to be expected. Your comment would likely have been different if Fulmer were in the spotlight.

he got the girl a scholly, she wasn't being offered by any other Div 1 program. if tedford did the same thing, he'd currently be commited to Cal. He admitted the reason why he commited to florida is because his girlfriend got a scholorship. at least it's a little questionable.

No, I don't think so. In fact, I can't remember a single time that I've been critical of Fulmer for a recruiting issue.

I jump on him because I think he's a fraud when it comes to throwing his players under the bus for his own failures. And I've decried some of the discipliary failures (as I have Forida's own problems). I'll grant you that. But I don't think I've said anything about recruiting questions.

I wouldn't like that if it were the case. Not surprised by it, but that would be wrong, IMO.

Two things sealed it for Florida, Moore said: instincts he shared with his mother, and Florida willing to budge a bit more. Moore said if the Gators could grant a gymnastics scholarship to girlfriend Maranda Smith, he was headed to the Sunshine State.

Wait a sec. Your first quote says she didn't get an offer from any other D-I school but the story in your second says she was offered one by UCLA. Not saying that makes it right, but let's not portray her as completely untalented and underserving of a scholarship. Perhaps she is.

she got offered by UCLA until she got injured and then it was pulled.

edit: I got it slightly wrong

As the story goes, Meyer wasn't having much success convincing Moore to transfer to Florida. Then Meyer learned that Moore's girlfriend, Maranda Smith, had competed for UCLA's gymnastics team in 2006, but quit after an injury.

That's because we run a clean ship. We've asked the NCAA for a new rule that allows at least a nickel bag for each campus visit, just so we can maintain our perfect record.

Oh, okay. That would explain the juco route for her. Wonder if she healed up ...

At any rate, I'm sure its being investigated and the NCAA will review it and figure out if there was anything done improperly. Seems apparent on its face its not a Reggie Bush-type scenario. But if Meyer pulled strings to give a scholarship to an otherwise unqualified athlete in order to secure another recruit, then there ought to be some sort of repercussion for that. Maybe not quite death penalty level, but not a minimal censure either.

Once again, I find myself literally laughing out loud.
