Recruiting

I agree with Jack. Our most immediate need is OL,DL and at LB. With all the losses at those positions depth will be a priority. There have been alot of 5* recruits not pan out. Look at Sidney Rice of South Carolina. He was a 3*. It doesn't matter what they did before they come here it's what do after they get here. Another example is Penn St. Their recruting classes were ranked 25th(2005), 14th(2004), 93rd(2003) and 21st(2002). They are one play away from being undefeated. I think if we recruit to our needs and get quality players to replace what we lost we will be fine.

Scout has us at ranked at 52 as of now. We only have 7 commitments, and 2 of those are soft. They are not shouwing any JUCO'S and I have seen where we had 2 strong JUCO's. One a LB. What are any of you hearing?

This was a big surprise. I know we finish strong but 52, thats a long way to go to get a top class.

calm down. recruiting is way overrated anyway.

what was jay cutler coming out of high school. probably a 2 star.

so dont worry about recruiting. it is just a piece of the pie. lets get the coaching part fixed first.

thanks CBC....some sanity...too much pub gets put on recruiting anyway....look at Va Tech as another example of a program you never hear about during recruiting season....

lest not forget the one thing this staff does do well is recruit...we'll be fine, and we do have a lot of folks from previous classes waiting in the wings....

Let's see if they get that player development thing worked out in the off season...that's where we'll either reep the dividends or crash and burn...

Max Emfinger said last night in the Cleveland banner that he still didn't see Tennessee not ending up in the top 10 this year in recruiting . :eek:k:

UT always finishes strong...will have atleast a top 15 class plus recruits love immediate playing time..something UT may be able to offer.

Where in next years lineup do we promise immediate playing time to a frosh? I've read this a lot, seems to me there is a good deal of depth across both sides of the line.

yeah, maybe promise is too strong a word, but there may very well be some competition for time especially at skill position....and we do need depth at OL, right?

OL is the only area on the team that I would call a need area. I say this because of the possibility of Sears and Smith leaving.

it looks real bad. fulmer is going to need to nail some blue chippers or his stretch of top 25 classes is over.

reasons ok. the state of tennessee's best prospect op's for florida st intead of the home town vols. our best recruit is soft at best and looks maybe heading elsewhere. we have ten recruits, two kickers. georgia, florida, auburn, lsu are all spanking us in recruiting and there is no chance we can catch them. while georgia is getting the #1 QB in the nation we can't get a top 100 to look at us. coming off a 5-6 season with a late start in recruiting because of fulmer inability to hire his staff in normal timely manner seems to be spelling disaster. all reasons why tennessee is stuck in neutral and the rest of the sec is running away from us.

Every year everyone starts crying about how bad our recruiting going to be and (Old Phil) loads the boat at the end . :whistling: It always slow for Tennessee until last of Jan . :victory: [attachmentid=3886]

Smokedog, the problem with your arguement is that we don't have a real need at any position. Brandon Warren is a TE/DE and TN does not need either one of those. It would be nice to sign a QB this year and I think DC is going to be able to get one. I would not be suprised if Mitch Mustain is a Vol come signing day. They have the luxury this year of picking and choosing who they want this year b/c of the depth of the last few classes. Have no fear smoke dog the Vols will be back next year.

Look, it doesn't matter who Tennessee recruits because they don't develop talent anymore. Chavis can develop the talent. Maybe Cutcliffe will! :cross:

Mustain says that the Vols are in the Picture. Coach Cut had been with him while he was with ND and has made some contact now that he is at UT.

What is the philosophy on recruiting QB's? Do you take them whenever you can get them. Or do you try to space them out where it's not one senior after another?

jacksonian i have to disagree. we need depth at linebacker, DB'S, RB'S, and we still need a QB. your right there are not any glaring needs, but you have to account for the people to that don't pan out and tennessee has alot of them. you also have to account for injuries, look at our runningback situation. fulmer has always impressed in the passed and i'm hoping he proves me wrong, but then again he has always been a better recruiter than coach. alot of our talent doesn't pan out, we can't afford a off year.
