Sorry OP, it's what we do. :)

The more addicted you become to VN, the more you'll understand. Call it an unfortunate side effect...

I get it I guess but seriously...recruiting dropped after Kiffin left and Dooley did a good job salvaging what was left, just wanted the opinion from people on what he could do with a full year.

There are many others on here that follow recruiting more than I do, but I'd say top 15 this year, top 10 in subsequent years. The bigger issue to me is whether or not we're filling needed positions no matter how the class is ranked. Unless you're a top flight program, it's hard to get top rated linemen so it's probably gonna bring a class ranking down when you have to bring in alot of linemen as opposed to bringing in alot of skill positions like some of Phil's last classes...of course I could be wrong, it's jmo. Many on here would agree that this staff has the chops to reel in top 10 classes each year.

The 2011 rankings are on rivals website. TN is running 9th or 10th in the SEC right now in recruiting. About the same as Miss State. I don't see TN doing any better than 7th in SEC recruiting by the end of the year.

wow, that's pessimistic, i think a lot will depend on the perception of how well the coaches are doing over this season. if we are seen as an up and coming program with the chance to play early with good coaching then we will do all right

What?
You have amnesia or selective memory. Didn't Dooley finish extremely strong last year with < 3 weeks on the job. He will probably be an extremely strong finisher year after year. IMHO

Kiffin already had them verbally committed to TN and some in school. A few jumped ship after the coaching change, so Dooley didn't finish as strong as Kiffin would have so we dropped from a top 5 class to a top 10 class in the last few weeks.

Already 60% of the 4 and 5 star players have committed, and 90% will be committed by November when the season is ending. So most of the good players will have already committed by the last month. For example Alabama has 13 four and five stars right now committed. Do you think all the star players that have committed through the year are going to change their mind and go to TN in the last few weeks? There won't be enough players interested in TN left to catch up to the big SEC teams if were still this far behind in the last month.

A lot of people say that a verbal commitment at this point only means that is where the recruit is leaning at the moment. A lot could change before NSD, look at last years...

Likely, the lowest SEC ranked recruiting class with a full coaching staff since the early 70's.

means alot. How we finish games, how we finish this year. Of course the lure of immediate playing time comes into play. If we can pick up an upset or two it also will play a big part. Perception of a team headed in the right direction and no possible sanctions from the NCAA.
That's a lot to contend with during a season.
Coach D definitely has his plate as full as anyone in the SEC, or nation for that matter. I'm on the bandwagon with the Vols, but patience is a lot to ask from fickle fans. Glad I'm not one of them. How we'll end up ranked is truly just a shot in the dark.
GO VOLS!

1. Recruits named Justin Hunter, Da’Rick Rogers come to mind as recruits that Dooley reeled in that weren't even interested in Tennessee...that's a pretty good job given that he was also speaking to already committed recruits about why they should stick with him. Attrition is inevitable when a coaching change happens, the fact that Dooley kept the class nearly intact is a good harbinger of what he's got as a recruiter.

2. We're currently three weeks into the season, a lot of those recruits still have official visits to take where they will speak with the coaches and actually learn about where they would fit in at a given program. You realize that many of those kids you're referring to will be switching their "commitments" right? It happens EVERY year.

closing them can be given to Dooley IMO but they had interest in UT before he got here

I agree that this sounds good to have a top 10 class. Unfortunately we are competing with teams that deliver top 5 classes. Least year Rivals had us at #9, but we were 5th in the SEC behind UF, UA, AU, & LSU.

I like Dooley and I hope that he's a Saban & not a Shula, but I think we will have to start beating out the big boys on rankings and not just getting in the top 10.

Cue the "Stars ain't important" responses. . . :)

What he said. Plus, remember that Dooley was Saban's recruiting coordinator at LSU. He KNOWS how to sway kids' opinions. I believe we will have a top ten class and will land some surprises just like we did with Hunter and Rogers last year. Also, dangling the carrot in front of them about early playing time will be a HUGE factor in landing some of the kids, linemen especially. JMO, ought to be yours too :)

The gap in talent isn't too wide to compete if you can start finishing in the top ten though. We are probably looking at finishing around 13 this year from what I've seen so far. This is likely going to be a three year deal before we are able to compete for the SEC title again though.

I think we can offer early playing time at most positions, and Dooley is already playing several true freshmen. Recruits will like that combination. Scout has us ranked at 25 nationally now, many teams ranked higher simply have more commits at this time. Will we beat UF, Bama, LSU, AU? Probably not. As others have mentioned we're going after OL and DL guys, lot's of them and there just aren't a lot of 4 and 5 star guys to begin with. I think CDD and staff are doing well. People forget Dooley pulled Stone from Bama. Stone was not coming if Kiffin was coach and Saban had a two year head start.

With all the linemen we need to take this year coupled with Dooleys character recruiting(BTW I'm not complaining one iota-did I really see one eye Yoda on here the other day?- about this either), I will be ecstatic with a top 15 finish. Normally, lineman heavy classes aren't ranked very high anyway.
