Recruitment of Tim Couch back in the day! He wanted to be a Vol

Kid was a tremedous QB in college and I would've loved for him to have chosen Tennessee...He would've thrived here with Coach Cut around...He probably would've had a better pro career if he had come here...Always had a lot of respect for the guy even tho he was forced to choose Kentucky because he could've done great pretty much anywhere.

At that time, in Knoxville, Tim 'would have been sitting on the' Couch

Couch was a much better college QB than Martin. Stop saying Tee won us a NC. He didn’t. He was part of a loaded team that did. I mean why if instead of 57% completion. 2164 yards, 19 TDs and 6 INTs we would have had 72% completion, 4275 yards, 36 TDs and 15 INTs in 1998?
The team won the NC, but they weren’t going to win it without a QB who was 50/50 threat to run or pass.

We were a finesse team when Peyton was our QB, and if Tim Couch was the QB, the system wouldn’t have changed. We got slaughtered by Nebraska, and with Tee behind center, the team basically had to transform into a power running team where the run set up the pass. We weren’t winning a NC without that change in philosophy, and there were numerous players on that team who were on record stating that at the time.

Couch put up great numbers at under a completely different system. He was running the Mike Leach offense, aka Hal Mumme ball. If you stuck him in Tennessee’s offense that year, those numbers would’ve been nowhere near that good because we relied on the running game to set up Peerless off the play action deep. We were throwing deep at a much higher percentage. Plus Tee also had to grow into the starting roll. After the Auburn game, his completion percentage was over 60% in 1998. Plus Tee kept defenses on the back foot with his running threat. Couch would’ve been a better qb statistically no doubt, but we don’t win the NC by not changing our entire offensive philosophy in 1998. Couch at QB would’ve been more of the same thing.

I always thought Tee was an underrated passer and overrated runner. He was good in short yardage situations getting it in the end zone.

His very pedestrian QB rating was due to the change in philosophy after Cut left. I peg that squarely on Fulmer taking the reins of the offensive plans. The offense mostly ran pass plays in obvious situations. We ran the ball like a power running team, and we passed the ball like a power running team.
Tee was a very good CFB QB, at least.

We didn’t exactly face a Nebraska style that season. If Kansas State hadn’t been upset, that may have been the closest litmus test. Chavis simply didn’t scheme well against run heavy option teams. Frank Solich was no Osborne, but his Nebraska team dominated the Vols (with Tee) the very next season.

Hmm.

Some people would say all Tennessee fans are friends. Even family. We're one big community.

You don't roll that way. Got it.

You're wrong, and you're not experienced enough with teams (of all types, sports, military, whatever) to understand what I'm saying.

Team chemistry never stands alone. It is always built to bind together the parts. And those parts can be strong or weak. But no matter how strong they are, they'll fall apart at the first sign of pressure unless the chemistry binding them together is solid.

Tell you what: build a house out of really good, high quality bricks. Name them after your defensive players, if you wish. Then stack them together with play-dough as your grout. Then see how strong the house stands, and for how long.

An example closer to home: bad team chemistry is what cost us vs South Carolina last fall. It wasn't a problem all season, but it was a problem that week. And we paid for it, big-time.

Team chemistry is not the only thing, no. It is the most important single thing, though. Otherwise "team" devolves into just a bunch of "me"s.

Go Vols!

Dude, you don't know me at all. I have ran a successful sales force and business for 30 years that started from scratch. No one said team chemistry isn't important. Everyone knows it is. But, it isn't everything as you stated. Your stupid analogies aren't going to win this debate for you. You lost the debate and proved yourself as a fool a long time ago.

Anyone with a brain knows there were lots of QBs that would have lead UT to a NC that year with the D, OL, WR, and RBs UT had!!! You can't say Tee won us the NC because he didn't! He just managed the O well and scrambled for a few first downs to help UT win. Many QBs out there could have done what Tee did or could have done much better!

If Fulmer wouldn't have relied too much on Peyton when he was at UT and got a little lazy at recruiting stud OL and stud RBs, UT would have won a NC or two with Peyton. Peyton was by far much better than Tee. There were a ton of QBs much better than Tee that year. Tee was no Manning.

Here are some facts for you. Tee wasn't in the top 20 in pass completions, pass completion percentage, or passing TDs. He was 6th in the SEC in completions, 4th in the SEC in completion percentage, and tied for 3rd in the SEC in TDS. Tennessee was 73rd in the country in passing O in 98. Tennessee was 9th in rushing O in 98. UT was 9th in Total D in 98, UT doesn't win a NC without the awesome D that it had in 98 as well as the great running game. Again, Tee wasn't the reason, period! Point proven!

You're too angry, friend. Calm down. It'll be alright.

Get a life! 20,000 messages shows you don't have any! Again, you were proven wrong. All you can say is I am too angry. I am not angry. I am laughing at your lack of knowledge. One would think you would have some football IQ with 20,000 posts. But, you don't. You have proven that multiple times with your idiotic posts!

I let things get under my skin on the forum from time to time.
Wish I didn't.
It makes stress out of nothing at all.
Disagreement is never the end of the world. We need To re-learn how to let it go.

It is sad that we carry resentment when people don't agree with our ideas and feelings, because we gravitate so hard to people who agree with us on social media.
An echo chamber is bad for our concept of our own importance.

Sometimes the new world is not better than the old one.

Wow, his dad was a douche. I love the Vols, but if my child has their heart set on playing for another program, rival or not, I support them.
