Matt Simms Film
PROS: Simms film shows good touch on deep balls and the ability to throw the seam route around the hash marks. He looks kind of stiff and seems to lack athletic ability, but he does just enough to move around or sidestep the rush. Footwork is decent, but not overly impressive. He comes from an offense that has him under center which will benefit him in the college game. Good anticipation on timing routes, seems like he knows when somebody should break open.
Cons: A highlight film can be a very deceptive thing. Think about it like pictures on the Internet, you only show the best ones. It's whats NOT on his film that worries me. He has no film on throws that would show his arm ability (deep outs/ins). He immediately locks on to the receiver he wants to throw to without pumping/looking off coverage. Sometimes shows the "Gun-Slinger" mentality by throwing into coverage.
Needs to work on: In Community College (think of the best teams from a 6A High School Conference) the windows to throw into are MUCH better/bigger than he will get in the SEC. Needs to be able to look off coverages so his passes aren't telegraphed at the next level. Needs to learn when to throw the ball away when a play doesn't develop and not take so many chances.
Conclusion: Simms is overall a very polished and accurate passer. He shows ability to "feel" pressure without taking eyes off receivers. He avoids the rush very well and does just enough to avoid the pressure. Shows very workable mechanics with an acceptable release. He puts the ball in a good location where the receiver has the best opportunity to make a play. His familiarity with being under center will put him ahead of QB's coming from mostly "shot-gun" sets. Once he shows ability on long outs/ins, he is an SEC caliber QB. He will end up being a better college QB than his brother Chris who played at Texas.
