Refs got bullied

The pass interference was a bad call. Unfortunately, that happens more than it should.

However, I can't think of a worse precedent to set than caving in to unruly fans, and leading them to believe that they can get calls overturned by pitching a fit and throwing debris on the field.

It's easy to predict what will happen the next time Texas is at home, and they're screwed on a judgment call.

Everybody gets hosed once in a while. The refs should have let the bad call ride. You can't reward bad behavior.

I think the replay officials in Birmingham got on the headset and told them to change it or ar least encouraged them to discuss it further

As a Tennessee fan, I’m hesitant to sit on a high horse and complain about other fans throwing trash onto the field. However, the media completely and repeatedly trashing UT for it in 2021 and just sweeping it under the rug when other other teams like Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas do it, that is really frustrating to deal with.

But once that call is made, you can’t pull it back
You shouldn't pull it back especially after that reaction from the crowd but they did.

And since I don't see where a crew does that on its own, Birmingham had to have a hand in it.

When people talk about the Refs cheating for Alabama and Texas, I guess I never thought I would see it at that level. I am going to assume that they looked at the jumbotron and it was effectively a review, although I didn't really look for that while the whole thing was going on.

Now, that said, the crowd was right. But it's also true that the rules of the game are immovable. I have seen refs make up fake rules only 2 or 3 times in my whole life. I guess we'll have to get used to this level of turpitude with Texas in the SEC.

I have never seen anything like what happened at Texas. Kirby was right in what he said. More coaches should voice their thoughts. They make enough money put it out there

I just read an article on ESPN.com about the Texas fans throwing bottles onto the field. The article also mentions Tennessee from 2021. However, it doesn’t mention the UGA fanbase from the 2022 national championship game against Bama doing the same thing. And also it didn’t mention Ole Miss doing the same thing last year. So sickening.

Why are there unreviewable calls in the first place? ALL CALLS should be reviewable.

College Football, in general, needs to re-evaluate and change some of their rules, notably the subjective ones like holding.

Just reviewed the play on the DVR. Bet you are right. During the bottle cleanup, the ref suddenly called THE MEETING. Bet a polygraph would prove it was ONLY after replay whispered in his ear.

The defender had great position, and the receiver tried to go to his left, but the defender slid into that path to impede his progress and then initiated the contact extending both arms to push the receiver out of the way before he caught the ball. Had to be a flag on somebody and the receiver was trying to avoid contact as the rule requires. The announcers and talking ref made horrible real time analysis. Go watch and get back to me with any error in my account.

From the SEC's official statement:

"The game officials gathered to discuss the play, which is permitted to ensure the proper penalty is enforced, at which time the calling official reported that he erred, and a foul should not have been called for defensive pass interference. Consequently, Texas was awarded the ball at the Texas 9 yard line. While the original evaluation and assessment of the penalty was not properly executed, it is unacceptable to have debris thrown on the field at any time."

So the guy who dropped the flag and then reported to the Ref what the penalty was which was announced over the stadium PA suddenly had a change of heart and realized he blew the call.

Even Birmingham shouldn't be able to review calls that are already discussed and announced.

Right or wrong there has to be a cutoff. That's why we hear too often: "the call on the field is....... that play is under video review" and we wait.

Birmingham HAD THEIR CHANCE to get in the ear of the field refs and didn't. Period. Lousy call, great call, whatever. The field refs blew it, the review refs blew it. It happens but you just can't overturn penalities that went through the process and completed it.

I’m all for picking up a flag for a mistake. But you simply can’t do it after it has been announced, assessed, and the game has moved on to the next play. As you say, got to let it ride at that point. It’s such a bad bad look, especially after the fans got unruly.
