Reilly on Jimmer

he was byu's only offensive option. hard to expect him to be an elite defender. the jury is still out on his defensive ability.

I don't expect him to be an elite defender. I'm just not sure he can be an average defender at the 1 or 2.

I do think he could create his own shot, to some degree, and become an effective scoring option.

What's his ceiling? JJ Reddick?

Nobody plays D, because everybody plays D. It's a paradox.

One on one nobody in the NBA can defend anybody really. It's not a paradox. You need help defense to stop even an average scorer at times. The majority of blocks come from help defense and maybe most of steals, too. The trick to on the ball D is slow your guy down enough so that your center has time to try to alter his shot, cause you aren't stopping anybody consistently on your own.

And btw, they said the same stuff about Redick's D in college, but he's a respectable NBA defender now. I've seen him do a great job defending guys like Ray Allen, even.

BYU's Jimmer Fredette - ESPN

I usually respect Reilly, but I think this kind of makes him look like an idiot. He hammers Jimmer for not being spectacular in the one game he watched Fredette. Fredette played his heart out and had nothing left in the tank for OT. In regulation he scored 32 at 42% (and was never open) with 4 TO's. The Jimmerettes scored 36 at 34% (and were frequently open).

He thinks he can't be a good pro because of his D?

(1) nobody plays D in the NBA

(2) defense can be taught
(3) Jimmer couldn't afford too much defensive effort, because BYU needs him 40 minutes every night on the offensive end

Bruce Bowen disagrees.

If you are saying at that level great offense beats defense, one-on-one I agree but it's because guys are better at making contested shots, where as at lower levels many guys struggle with that.

Guys play great D on Kobe but he still busts a jumper even with a hand in his face.

Yeah, that's one reason why I say on the ball D doesn't matter. Also I think they call more fouls in favor of the offense in the NBA. Like the ridiculous trick everyone pulls to get their guy in the air and they jump 2 feet forward into the defender to draw contact even though it's a 20 foot jumper AND THEY GET THE CALL EVERY TIME!

Day-walker, LOL. Nice.

Someone alluded to the Jimmer as the Adam Morrison of guards. I'll go with that.

I saw a Mock draft that had him going #10 to the Charlotte Bobcats. Michael Jordan used a #1 pick on Adam Morrison, and I can see them giving the kid a shot.

nobody in the nba plays defense
BUT
everyone in the nba can play defense from late april on.

I watched 3 jimmer games and he is a college hero, prolly will play in the league but will most likely just be a contributer.

I wonder what Reilly is saying about Kemba Walker after his 5 for 19 performance? Probably nothing since Lamb and Oriakhi carried him to victory.
