Of course it is all rumor at this point, but appears there are three possible things that are contributing to not having a coach yet.
1) UT is the pawn used by coaches to get a raise, contract extension and other benefits,
2)UT is not the prestigous job we thought it to be.
3) Hart is the problem. This could be for several reasons.
a)Hart has taken a very poor tactical approach regarding who he could target and convince to come.
Examples:
-Fisher: FSU is a top, TOP job and a recruiting paradise. I couldn't see anyone leaving there unless there were serious issues. And there aren't.
Same goes for Stoops at OU.
-Gundy: OSU. Alumni and former QB already making top dollar. ($3.75) Just doesn't make sense for him to leave. Was surprised that Hart even got an interview.
-And those were your three 'proven' targets. None presented a viable option, IMO.
Strong: This guy is already overpaid. I saw he was making $3.5 mil. He is likely to get another boost due to BCS bowl appearance. UL is now in a major conference and pumping Pizza money into the program. How do you justify giving Strong $4 mil plus to come to UT? I can't see it. He is not such a coach.
-UT should be looking for an underpaid coach. Fedora is one such guy. I'm sure there are others, but nothing that is going to resonate with excitment.
When you really look at the route Hart took it was destined for trouble. Start with Gruden. Pipe dream, but I still think it was doable. Then you hear of several proven coaches, but do any show any reason to leave their current program for any reason other than stupid money? No.
b) Dave Hart really wasn't planning on canning Dooley until after Vandy loss, and has been playing catch up to other schools who already had plan and date in place.
c) Dave Hart basically painted a terrible picture at the press conference when they fired Dooley. This guy is paid millions to sell the program, and he basically is telling everyone that UT is on life support. That my friends is freaking ridiculous. I'm not saying the issues aren't real. But you don't outline the problems, you sell the benefits.
This coaching search appears to have lots of issues. Sure, you want a 'proven' winner, but the coaching landscape does not present itself with a lot of options.
Auburn took a gamble. Arkansas saw an underpaid, over acheiver and attacked. Kudos to them. Who would have thought the Wisconsin coach was in play? My guess is that BB sent out his own feelers, and was not happy at Wisc. Don't see Arkansas contacting him. Not aware of any leaks.
As with anything, I could be wrong. Hart may have this thing licked, and is smokescreening everyone. I don't have any marvelous source. I'm not going to jump off a bridge if they shut they whole program down tomorrow. Just an alumni who'd like to see UT get back to decent football again. That's just how I see it.
-When major news sources are reporting offers, and then suddenly reporting candidates out of the picture, there are problems. It appears that UT has been turned down or at least told 'not interested,' by at least four coaches at this point. So, if the rejections are true, then it is likely the next candidates are already aware that they are in the 'plan B' category.
