Rejected?

So your rationale is that he sucks because you don't like his name? Makes sense.

No I'm just sayin that he's not a Tennessee worthy hire. We must get a household name.

So Gruden (pipe dream/silliness), Petrino (for being scum), or Tressel (for being shady and banned). Those are the only household names. BTW UT isn't what it used to be and we have to work our way back to the point of being a household name.

Of course it is all rumor at this point, but appears there are three possible things that are contributing to not having a coach yet.
1) UT is the pawn used by coaches to get a raise, contract extension and other benefits,
2)UT is not the prestigous job we thought it to be.
3) Hart is the problem. This could be for several reasons.
a)Hart has taken a very poor tactical approach regarding who he could target and convince to come.

Examples:

-Fisher: FSU is a top, TOP job and a recruiting paradise. I couldn't see anyone leaving there unless there were serious issues. And there aren't.
Same goes for Stoops at OU.
-Gundy: OSU. Alumni and former QB already making top dollar. ($3.75) Just doesn't make sense for him to leave. Was surprised that Hart even got an interview.
-And those were your three 'proven' targets. None presented a viable option, IMO.

Strong: This guy is already overpaid. I saw he was making $3.5 mil. He is likely to get another boost due to BCS bowl appearance. UL is now in a major conference and pumping Pizza money into the program. How do you justify giving Strong $4 mil plus to come to UT? I can't see it. He is not such a coach.

-UT should be looking for an underpaid coach. Fedora is one such guy. I'm sure there are others, but nothing that is going to resonate with excitment.

When you really look at the route Hart took it was destined for trouble. Start with Gruden. Pipe dream, but I still think it was doable. Then you hear of several proven coaches, but do any show any reason to leave their current program for any reason other than stupid money? No.

b) Dave Hart really wasn't planning on canning Dooley until after Vandy loss, and has been playing catch up to other schools who already had plan and date in place.

c) Dave Hart basically painted a terrible picture at the press conference when they fired Dooley. This guy is paid millions to sell the program, and he basically is telling everyone that UT is on life support. That my friends is freaking ridiculous. I'm not saying the issues aren't real. But you don't outline the problems, you sell the benefits.

This coaching search appears to have lots of issues. Sure, you want a 'proven' winner, but the coaching landscape does not present itself with a lot of options.
Auburn took a gamble. Arkansas saw an underpaid, over acheiver and attacked. Kudos to them. Who would have thought the Wisconsin coach was in play? My guess is that BB sent out his own feelers, and was not happy at Wisc. Don't see Arkansas contacting him. Not aware of any leaks.

As with anything, I could be wrong. Hart may have this thing licked, and is smokescreening everyone. I don't have any marvelous source. I'm not going to jump off a bridge if they shut they whole program down tomorrow. Just an alumni who'd like to see UT get back to decent football again. That's just how I see it.
-When major news sources are reporting offers, and then suddenly reporting candidates out of the picture, there are problems. It appears that UT has been turned down or at least told 'not interested,' by at least four coaches at this point. So, if the rejections are true, then it is likely the next candidates are already aware that they are in the 'plan B' category.
You fools do not have a clue what's going on. That was learned with Gruden saga and Arkansas hire.

A fool? Sorry you can't relate to a level headed evaluation. I didn't claim any inside knowledge. Only an opinion based on observation.
Now, if you want to say that CBS and ESPN who were presenting conflicting reports regarding who the job was offered to, then take it up with them. Otherwise, I doubt you even read half of what I wrote and contributed jack squat. Congrats.

Maybe if we are having trouble hiring away coaches from OSU and UL it's because we fired a coach after 14 successful seasons out of 17 years, and just 1 year removed from the SECCG. Just sayin'.

Your "level headed evaluation" is meaningless.

sums it up=====we suck

No we don't. We are TENNESSEE!

Could it be all of these leads, offers, turn-downs are all a part of a campaign to get the base to accept a lesser candidate? These political maneuvers can wear down the weak-minded. But alas, we are better than that.

We are not rejected...our leaders just need to step up and get us a top-tier coach. Again, we are TENNESSEE!

You can capitalize it all you want. This isn't a top tier job at the moment.

I agree with Roustabout: Much as the fans want us to make some "home-run" hire, it's not realistic. Few schools hire big names. If Gruden gets back into coaching, it will be in the NFL. Stoops and Fisher have great jobs at great programs now, and Gundy is very well paid--would be close to a lateral move for him. Everybody is overpaid--that's one issue. Strong, all things considered, was our best and most feasible option--and I think he'd be stupid not to take this job. We'll know by the end of the day. Our best big-name option is Petrino, but of course he's got baggage. Is that baggage enough to keep him from getting another good job--maybe. I thought auburn would hire him. Who was Fulmer when he was hired? A coordinator. Tressel came from a completely obscure college, didn't he? Urbie came from Utah--how many coaches from schools like utah are in big demand from big programs? Virtually none. Look at Pearl--the guy came to UT from wisconsin-milwaukee. You look for a guy with head coaching experience who's won and who's impressed. Maybe Fedora is that guy--but he JUST got hired by UNC and that's a problem for us, too. There are a lot of good coaches out there--and Hart will find one of them.

Our tradition hasn't changed.
oUR facilities havn't changed.
Our financial resources remain strong cmpared to many programs.
So, I think we are still a top tier job!
We just need a top tier coach! Go Vols!
