Remaining 2014 Class

Anyone worried the new arrivals won't have enough time to get their strength up and get a grasp on the defensive playbook?

For the lineman, yes. For the secondary and LB guys, not so much. McDowell and TK jr are SEC size already. Evan Berry has athleticism to play CB early.

As for our LBs, what we really need is one of them to be able to come in in coverage in passing situations. Elliot Berry and Dillon Bates have the athleticism for that.

The latter two most likely won't have the size or strength to start over JRM or AJ this season though.

Weatherd not being an EE worried me though. I have a feelig he'll end up playing a similar role to Maggit. He could benefitted greatly from the strength and conditioning of spring to do that IMO. I still wouldn't put it past him to make some noise as a pass rusher though.

I feel these individual individuals will individualize their individuality.

Nope. After seeing the pictures of Joe Henderson, I know strength should not be a problem for him. And I have little doubt about the others putting in their work on their own. Grasping the playbook should not really be that big of an issue if they enroll in May. They not not be as polished as everyone would prefer, but they have time to be ready to contribute.

Kind of what I thought and no need to risk injury.

Leadership on the field is important but I can see CBJs point.

The tackling is a concern and still not understanding it from years past.

We are missing the Passion of hitting as seen in the years past.

Ten. hasn't tackled in the last 10 years.

Hate to depend on freshmen, but we are where we are. The light at the end of the tunnel is that those freshmen and sophomores will be battle tested and ready in 2015. I believe a 6 or 7 win season in 2014 will be a good year for this team.

I agree, and in my opinion Butch is counting very heavily on getting re-enforcements with the guys coming in. I look for him to use Kelly, Bates, Berry's, Weathered, Barnett asap.

Yeah this years defense will be one of the most athletic units we have had in years. Will get a glimpse of what is to come ..

Weatherd and Maggit of the edge rushers from LB or put there hand in the dirt. Along with blitzes from swafford / coleman at the nickel. Actual speed at the CB position - Sutton and Mosely. Deadly hitters at the Safety position Gaulden / Kelly . That Mean from Bryant and IMO Henderson at DE. LOL then plug in Cecil Cherry the next year.

I agree. When you think about it. 98 Defense was Jacked.

I am trying to think when was the last Solid Defensive unit we put on the Field.

Monte Kiffin's Defense was good, but without E Berry, Jackson and a few others it was fluff.

By my count 14 will be a part of the defense (all but Paulk, Scott,Wharton, and Medley).

Of those 14, over half are 4 stars (depending on which recruiting service you use).

I would expect to find 2-3 guys who can step in immediately out of that group and the rest to provide quality depth. As far as who could step in and end up starting, I'd keep my eye on Kelly, McDowell, Evan Berry, Bates, or Weatherd. Any of those guys could be starting or in the rotation by the end f the year.

In the trenches we add a lot of bodies, but honestly my hopes aren't up too high for any of them to make a huge impact. Though if any do, my money is on Hendrix or Barnett. Whatever happens, we need at least one of Barnett, Sawyers, Mosley, Robertson to show themselves capable of being a part of the DT rotation. I think we're ok at DE for the most part.

There's been a lot of speculation that Robertson or Mosley could end up on the OL. If one is moved, my money is on Robertson because he fits the athletic mold of what our coaches want at OG. You don't see many 350 lb guards.

Robertson is up to 350 lbs, too? Mosely is, but I thought Robertson was more than 310 or 315 range.

Come on man, 2000-2004 we had some really good defenses, john henderson, Albert haynesworth, Kevin Simon, rashard baker, Andre Lott, mayo, Burnett, Overstreet, Harrell, just to name a few. I really liked the 01 D myself. But since those seasons we've been soft as a whole.

I'd say the first place these men stop off is the weights room and start hitting them hard. 2 months is good time to get some strength up and most will gain muscles and weight in that time as well. By the looks of it some have already been doing that. My only concern is learning the playbook. Anyone know if they are allowed to get a copy of the play book before they are "enrolled" now that they have sign the LOI?

I was spoiled because of the defenses I have witnessed of the years past. Reynolds, Kiner, Little, Walker, Wilson, Priest, Majors, White, Fair, just to name a few.

Think about the 98 team there wasn't just one or two players on defense it was loaded. Previous years were also loaded with 4 or 5 future Draft picks. We haven't seen a defense that was loaded like the 98 team since then.

In the good ole days our Defense always had at least 4-6 headhunters, not just 2 or 3.
