Remember When? (Heup and Gus)

Two things, 1. What was Malzahn’s record this year compared to last year. I ask because they joined the Big 12 this season. 2. Everyone forgets Heupel had a lot of starters sit out the Covid year.

Overall, I still say Malzahn is a good hire for UCF. Still glad Heupel is at Tennessee.
Think it's ultimately GOOD they joined the B12 elevated conference. The more teams are able to drain the talent pool swamp of FL players, along w/ Miami and FSt, the tougher it makes things for the currently not-so mighty Gators.

Honestly Heupel's record at UCF regressed every year. That's a fact and they haven't gotten any better under Gus, that's for sure. While I'd rather have Heupel because he's younger and doesn't have a known ceiling, I think it's premature to say he's clearly better than Gus. Gus had some good years at Auburn and has beat Saban as much or more than anyone.

We are very fortunate to have CJH. Is he perfect? No. But he is a high level coach and manager of the program and has created an impressive culture. Our patience will be rewarded IMO.

To be fair, most fan bases do that. Many Vol fans did it after Kiffin left and then talked up Dooley as being the better and more stable solution. I think it’s part of our nature to convince ourselves that we are better off.
That is what I meant by you can't help but try to save face.

I’m happy with Heupel but you won’t catch me dissing Gus. He’s a good coach.
Watch the Mitch Mustang documentary and see shat Gus did to his kids at Arkansas and get back to me.

Pretty sorry how he left those kids in the cold and not a word from him.

I knew what you meant. I’ve seen it so much among our fanbase with players as well. We like revisionist history, but I clearly remember fans saying Tajh Boyd and Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t be a big loss and we may even be better off. It sounds silly, but I promise it happened. I remember hearing it about Chris Simms(which actually did work out fine, imo, but was a huge deal when he spurned us). I’ve done this too. I remember convincing myself that Cuonzo was what we needed and he’d be the one to get us to a final 4. We can think and say pretty dumb things when we are desperate to be optimistic.

That documentary is one sided as hell, I don't find Mitch and his Mom very credible. She did as much to wreck his career as anybody. It's pretty asinine in retrospect when you consider that she wanted to air it out in the SEC with a true freshman, when they had Darren McFadden on the team. I don't blame the coaches at all for relying on handing off to the multi-year future NFL starting running back instead of her 5 star bust son.

All that aside, I was talking about how Gus just left and took another job and didn’t say anything to any of the kids that came to Arkansas because he went there. Wasn’t a good situation all around, but kids that looked up to you with respect, you at least discuss the situation with them.

Heupel has been great, but let's see how these next two seasons go.
I was in favor of hiring Hugh Freeze and am still wondering if he would not have been the better option. He wanted the job at Tennessee.
I know the NCAA wouldn't have liked the hire after the Pruitt problems, but in the long run ....................

Having said that, I am pulling hard for Heupel to succeed here long term. I like the guy.

I will admit i was worried about Huepel hire who regressed there every year after taking over unbeaten team from Frost. I would have been happier at that point to get Malzhan, a SEC guy who beat Nick few times.
I was wrong.
Actually Frost won with George O'Leary's players he GO'L was at UCF 15 years, Frost then parlayed his 2 year stint into showing he's not a real HC, took over his alma Nebraska team that was not in as bad of shape as the Dooley/Butch/Pruitt Tennessee under a cloud of sanctions that Hype took over. Nebraska and Tennessee both have a rich history, Frost was fired.

Yeah I think you're right about pulling off players the Florida's 3 over the years have been able to stock and hold great depth a lot like Bama &UGA but with UCF & USF both on the rise those guys will go there on recruiting or portal instead of sitting & waiting at 1 of the big 3 for their turn.

Nailed it. Don't think there's any way we'd have been allowed to hire him, and I don't think most wanted him, after the trifecta dysfunction of orange pants Dools, clown-car brick show Butch, and Jeremy and his McD Chronicles and coaching malpractice... Agree, Freeze, long term would have probably worked...think he can coach, but he was a red-hot hands off for P5 schools at that time. Just glad we have a guy w/ JH who doesn't seem morally or mentally flawed in a big way.

Wouldn't the counter argument be that Huep won with what Frost left and Gus is working with what Huep left?
Not saying I agree or that it matters, just curious.
