People's (coaches, etc) children are OFF LIMITS. Period. There is ZERO leeway on this.

Do NOT bring children in to the discussions.

Thank you.

VG,
We often fail to see eye-to-eye on many many things. However, I am in full and complete agreement with you on this matter, and fwiw, thanks for putting this out. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Personally, I'd be happy to see temp bans for posters who bring up coaches children and their enrollment placement or status.

I've said it before and will stand by my word (until my lawyer tells me otherwise) that any administrator, teacher, secretary, etc. that passes on information about a student is in violation of FERPA and at risk of losing their job, licensure, etc, and that any poster putting information on the board about the children is putting whichever school they're referring to at risk for investigation.

Is seeing someone fired really worth that little e-cred? Apparently so. Ban'em until they learn to not bring it up.

While there may be some exceptions or loopholes in that, when I was teaching some undergrad classes for my grad school assistantship, our boss told us to assume answering - or simply commenting on - questions or passing along info about those sorts of things would always, always, ALWAYS be trouble. I could tell he was serious about this because I cracked a joke about telling the mother of someone I knew from my hometown (she was in one of the classes I would either be teaching or assisting in) if they showed up hung over, and he just about lost it.

Though likely not as strict as HIPAA (in most cases, anyway), FERPA is absolutely not to be trifled with. I think a stern warning (in some cases, offenders may not be aware of their offense), then a ban (temporary or permanent on case-by-case basis) from VN for repeat offenders is completely appropriate.
