I'm pretty sure I have seen a replay of them many moons ago but a couple of things I had forgotten:
-I forgot just how physical of a runner Hardesty was. There's one missed gang tackle on him vs Cal that is one of the best I've seen.
-Brad Nessler was a ton better in his prime before coming to CBS.
-I remember Crompton coming alive against Georgia but I noticed nearly all of his highlights were rollouts and he was on the MONEY. Impressive.
I didn't remember the late one handed pic by Berry after the WR was hit. One of the best picks by a UT defender for sure.
Can anyone tell I'm longing for Sept 2?!?

I remember the Cal game as the "Robert Meachem Show." They put an undersized corner on him, who simply couldn't tackle him. Incidentally, the best seats I've ever had in Neyland were for this game, and they were just given to me by a co-worker whose father had unexpectedly passed away that week. Had an awesome time. The quality of seats can really make a difference when you're accustomed to the upper deck.

Crompton had a star-crossed career, but was mostly on target against UGA in '09. (Still had a pick six, however). I miss seeing Georgia suck.

Wasn’t Cal 06 the game when we got Cutcliffe back and saw the start of that last berief resurgence under Fulmer?
Yep ... Tennessee was in every game that year, except Arkansas. Beat Georgia 51-33 in Athens. Lost late leads at home to both Florida and LSU. An Arian Foster fumble beat us in the Citrus Bowl against Penn State.

Those games were two of the best from those years. I wonder if Milton is good throwing on a rollout? Would be pretty cool to do that to them again.

I will die on this hill. Our 2006 team was BCS title game good. We lost by a point to Florida. We had our opportunities. We ran the stupidest call in the history of Coach Cut playcalls w/ a QB draw that got Ainge hurt vs USCjr. We should’ve beaten LSU and would’ve beaten LSU with Ainge. I think we gave up against Arkansas.

Crompton comes alive, I see what you did there.

Didn't have tickets to 06 Cal but went down for the vol walk. Literally a sea of orange. I'll never forget how beautiful it was outside the stadium before that game

Loaded everywhere.
Arian Foster stumbled with a sophomore slump. Hardesty had a big day against Cal, but that was the high point of the season for the running game. It was definitely snuffed out against UF, LSU, Arkansas, and Bama.

Crompton played vs Arky. I think with healthy Ainge we may have been title worthy

Is this the one that was classified as a fumble recovery, and thus not allowing Berry to break a record?

I moved to Knoxville from New Mexico in February of 2006, and that Cal game was my first real introduction to Tennessee football. I probably romanticize it too much, but it's a very special game in my memory for that reason. I was buzzing the entire time—felt like I had finally seen what real college football looked like!

Looking at our rushing stats from 2006. They sucked. An average rushing attack would have won us 3 more games.
I know Foster was hurt. What else was going on?
Hardesty was young and LaMarcus Coker averaged almost 6yd/carry, but we were held under 100 yds rushing by all the good teams we played after Cal.

I also rewatched 06 Cal last night. I've watched 01 Florida, 98 Arkansas, and am now watching 90 Florida game today.

Shout-out to Larry Smith on YouTube (in case he posts here) for uploading all these classic games. You and Freak are da real MVPs.

Justin Harrel is one of Tennessee’s under appreciated legends. He needed shoulder surgery really badly but put off one week so he could play vs Florida. He really gave his all for Tennessee Reggie White would have been proud of him wearing #92
I don't think it was his shoulder. I think it was a bicep tear or something along those lines. I remember announcers talking about it, saying he put off surgery so he could play against Florida but he'd have to get surgery afterwards or it would start to atrophy. I remember his whole arm being in this huge cast with some kind of splint that would prevent it from extending. He played but he was so limited that he wasn't very effective.

Yes, I was fixing to post and say just that very thing. I will never forget that play for that very reason....everyone thought he had broken the record and then it was taken away from him as fast as he had gotten it because the ref said the Georgia receiver had possession of the football and it was a recovered fumble instead of an interception.

It was a torn bicep. That Air Force game sandwiched between Cal and Florida really did a number on our team between Harrell and of course Inky. I was a student that season and was at all of those games . That Cal 2006 game was one of those special games where Cal had no idea what they had walked into. That place was pissed off and rolling coming off of the 5-6 2005 debacle.
