Rewatched 06 Cal and 09 Ga highlights

It was a torn bicep. That Air Force game sandwiched between Cal and Florida really did a number on our team between Harrell and of course Inky. I was a student that season and was at all of those games . That Cal 2006 game was one of those special games where Cal had no idea what they had walked into. That place was pissed off and rolling coming off of the 5-6 2005 debacle.

It damn sure did! I remember listening to that game on the radio while I was doing some house remodeling and feeling so frustrated because I thought we would put that team away early. Turns out that triple option offense gave us terrible fits all day long. They were a very tough team, and we were extremely lucky to come away with a win that day.

Yes, I was fixing to post and say just that very thing. I will never forget that play for that very reason....everyone thought he had broken the record and then it was taken away from him as fast as he had gotten it because the ref said the Georgia defender had possession of the football and it was a recovered fumble instead of an interception.
Interesting. Eric berry was one of my favorite VFLs

People give me grief all the time when I say that I don’t want to play a service academy. I’ve called scared and other things. It’s not about being scared, it’s about keeping our guys healthy, and the reward is nowhere near the risk of the cut blocks and the preparation it takes to play a triple option sandwiched between 2 big time opponents.

I will die on this hill. Our 2006 team was BCS title game good. We lost by a point to Florida. We had our opportunities. We ran the stupidest call in the history of Coach Cut playcalls w/ a QB draw that got Ainge hurt vs USCjr. We should’ve beaten LSU and would’ve beaten LSU with Ainge. I think we gave up against Arkansas.

Cut made us a lot better those two years, but I felt like we were a little too much of a finesse team on offense. We certainly left some Ws on the field for sure

I agree that we should’ve been a little more physical given our stable of backs. I really hate the fact that Coker didn’t keep his head on straight enough for him to stay eligible. He was the best in the group IMO.

are you a NC native? i noticed the Panthers avatar.
NE AL/NW GA line. I remember as a kid it being about my favorite animal and I asked dad if there was a pro team that was the panthers (he a steelers fan). He said yes and they were fairly new. The 1st year I followed them just on the tv boxscore they went 7-9 (rabbit ears got us the Titans and I dont remember watching much fox for some reason). Followed them online the next year and they went to the SB. I was definitely hooked then. Don't watch much nfl anymore tho.
(A funny side note, my dad is actually a NC native then moved to GA).

That Cal team was loaded, Arkansas was as well but we got them good in 07,but lost to Cal in 07,its amazing the games we were blown out in 07 and still made the SECCG
07 is also remembered as the curse of being ranked #2, how many teams lost ranked #2 that year including USF, usc, cal, Boston College, Oregon, kstate, west virginia
Number 1 osu, and Mizzou loose, lsu to and unranked Arkansas

Yep ... Tennessee was in every game that year, except Arkansas. Beat Georgia 51-33 in Athens. Lost late leads at home to both Florida and LSU. An Arian Foster fumble beat us in the Citrus Bowl against Penn State.
2 of the most depressing losses I’ve been to. We had both of those games. Lsu game should’ve been over on a Jamarcus Russell fumble blown dead early and then we had the roughing the passer call on a Chris Leak pick 6 for barely touching his helmet.

Watching Russell run for 40yds in the last seconds of that game still gives me nightmares

I moved to Knoxville from New Mexico in February of 2006, and that Cal game was my first real introduction to Tennessee football. I probably romanticize it too much, but it's a very special game in my memory for that reason. I was buzzing the entire time—felt like I had finally seen what real college football looked like!

I remember walking out of the stadium after that one. Four Cal students were still sitting on the wall in front of their section just looking around as the stadium emptied. Heard one of them say, "I'm just going to sit here for a while and soak all of this in. This is real college football."

I also rewatched 06 Cal last night. I've watched 01 Florida, 98 Arkansas, and am now watching 90 Florida game today.

Shout-out to Larry Smith on YouTube (in case he posts here) for uploading all these classic games. You and Freak are da real MVPs.
First post, great forum. Lifelong Vol, class of '83, lived in East Stadium Hall as a freshman, where my uncle stayed when he played on the hill '59-60, led the team in receptions '59 with a ridiculously low total. Pedigree established.
My story on the Arkansas game was I was traveling for work, in Great Falls, Montana, and they were showing some other meaningless game on local TV. When that game ended, they cut to the end of Ark/UT and you could tell immediately it had been a hell of a fight. Players were all dirty and ragged on both sides, it was chippy, and TN was on defense, fighting like demons to find a way. As we all know, they did, I got to see the Stoerner stumble/fumble, but what I remember most was the way Cheese just POUNDED through the Arkansas defense for those few plays to score and clinch the win. O-line was dominant in gut-check time and Henry was one of the hardest runners to ever put on cleats out there. You need at least one game like that to win the Natty.
One of the all time great wins, I'll never forget it.
Go Vols!
