I know alot here probably don't care and/or haven't really thought about it but does anyone think that Arizona could be a surprise team out of the Pac"12" this year?

I haven't really paid any attention to their situation and was just curious to hear some thoughts.

Fire away.

I think Leach will make some noise. They have one of the best QB/WR combos in the country.

Really? Don't know much about their situation either.

As far as Rich Rod though, I think he's a good fit in Arizona. He may just sneak up on the Pac 16. Just a hunch.

They'll be alright. The biggest thing preventing me from stating they'll contend with UCLA and Utah for a top half position in the P12 South is the fact Nick Foles isn't there anymore (they actually don't return a single passing yard from 2011) and they lost their starting RB as well.

Their defense won't be as awful as last year's and their offense may slightly improve stat-wise because Matt Scott's a good fit for the RR offense, but their road schedule is too much (Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and Utah), plus they have to face a solid MAC squad in Toledo, Oklahoma State, Washington, and USC all at home. If the schedule was better I'd be comfortable in saying they'll be in the postseason, but for now I'd put them at 5-7 with a bowl bid hanging on an upset of one of UCLA/Oklahoma State/Washington.

Nice write up. Thanks.

I agree with everything you said except for UCLA. If Arizona beats UCLA I dont see that as an upset. UCLA has been the definition of an underachiever, and I'm not so sure itll be any better under Mora.

UCLA has a decent enough team this year. 16 returning starters, 5 P12 home games, hardest road game is either Cal or Arizona State, etc. 6 or 7 wins, if I had to guess.

Did UCLA replace Rick N? Good team maybe bad coach. I would like to see them do well but with him, no chance.

Offense has never been the problem in the P12. Defense is optional out there though.

I used to live in Zona, was a mild fan of the team while there because I attended a few classes and knew a few people who worked there. As I recollect, the UA had a history of hiring name coaches who'd had "some" success elsewhere, making early season splashes then not living up to their "promise" later on. It would happen again and again.

But one thing for sure. If you think there's hate between in-state rivals UT and Vandy, we actually in a kissy-poo relationship compared to the UA and ASU. There was a basketball player named Steve Kerr, I think. Big time three point shooter if I remember right. They were practicing at the ASU gym for the NCAA tournament or something. ASU students came in, sat on the bleachers and began a chant, "Steve where's your dad!?" This kid's dad was a hostage (can't recall if military man or what) and killed by terrorists in Lebanon. That was during the Reagan years.
Another example is when the ASU football team was going up against UCLA, UA fans came down in droves for the game. They cheered very loudly and constantly for UCLA. That's just two examples of the bitterness between the two schools.

Zona fans aren't exactly the classiest bunch

IMO Rich Rod will be par for the course in Tucson. 7-ish win type team at best most years.

The Pac-12 should easily be the most entertaining conference in the land this year (read: not necessarily the best), though. Sark, Leach, Kelly and Rich Rod all with the explosive offenses, UCLA and Utah should be nice to watch, USC is a legit BCSMNCG contender.

Although I'm curious as to how a pirate winds up in places like Lubbock and Pullman, the armpits of their respective conferences.

To be honest, Leach is really just too weird to be hired by a big-time school. He fits in perfectly in places like Lubbock and Pullman where they're historically mediocre and have fan bases that aren't as big as other schools in the state/region. I don't know if he'd have the same kind of success at one of the big Cal schools or somewhere.
