Richard Dawkins -vs- Billy Graham

Billy Graham, because he's right.

I completely missed this. I would love to see you defend your position.

Not sure how you can claim someone is right when the opponent is an Oxford professor in Evolutionary Biology, dealing in research, information, and factual statements, and has written several books on his subjects.

Billy Graham makes millions by standing in front of a camera, saying some mumbo-jumbo about Jesus Christ, then getting applauded by some brainwashed people.

Don't forget, we're talking intelligence not belief systems. Richard Dawkins runs circles around most everyone in debates.

I feel no need to defend this position. It's called faith. I think the man that is right is smarter than the man that is wrong.

But you're probably right... I'm sure Dawkins has read more books and spent many more years in school. I'm happy for him.

This response all but shocks me.

"Faith" is ****ing silly. It's a made up of bastardizations of reliance; reliance on nothing. Nada. Jack squat.

Richard Dawkins is a pretty smart dude, so I guess he's the answer to the question. However, I'm a big Billy Graham fan. I've been to his museum in Louisville on a couple of occasions and I've gained a lot of respect for him. Personally, I believe in what Graham believes in.

That's a shame.

What's a shame exactly? I'd like to hear some clout behind the swing.

FTR, I'd bet my bottom dollar that BG wouldn't approve of your handling of this line of questioning. You're only further entrenching your opposition in their current belief(s). You could simply leave it be, but you're choosing to be a turtle-shelled dipstick and give up on expounding your view.

My handling of this line of questioning? The question was asked, and I answered it. I feel no need to defend my faith on a message board.

If my faith bothers you enough that it further entrenches you in whatever it is you believe in, then I truly feel sorry for you and will pray for you tonight.

And there was no mystery meant in my comment above. I think it's a shame you feel the way you do about faith. You're itching for fight--that's pretty clear.

I'm itching for pure insight on this subject, as I've spent every opportune moment during my tenure as an agnostic. I'll vow to not argue with you. If you want to be a good Christian and sieze the opportunity to spread your good word, this is one of those times. I just want a logical perspective. It's never too much to ask for.

All I get is "faaaaiiith" *wah wah* "faaaaiiith"... give me some real intellectual stimulation on it. That word does nothing for me.

I'm not impoverished, I've already been exposed to monotheism, I've even experienced secular culture. It's not about defending whatever it is you hold... it's about contribution right now.

Again; not exactly sure what type of intellectual stimulation you'll garner from this, given you summarily dismiss any mention of the word faith.

I'm a born again Christian, and have been for 2 decades. I see God's miracles everyday around me, and He speaks to my heart. This is how I know He exists. You seem to be seeking some kind of tangible proof, and I simply can't offer you any.

I know my Christian duty, and I probably fail at it miserably everyday. Defending myself on a message board is not part of that duty, no matter what your perverted idea of Christianity is.

As evidenced by your name calling above, you are clearly itching for a fight.

Not a fan of either. Bought a book from William Lane Craig not to long ago. I'm not much into the debates but I've heard some good ones come from him.

But my faith and "ah ha!" doesn't come from any debates. Jesus saved me from disaster, and once I opened my heart to him, the whole questioning God thing was gone for good.

That's why I think debating is silly. You either believe or you don't.

DinkinFlicka, let them have their faith.

Not that you really care, VBN, but William Lane Craig is a joke. Just take a look at the way he handled Dawkins' refusal to debate him in Oxford. Craig sees the Old and New Testaments as historical documents and divine text, meaning all of the Old Testament is still applicable. He uses slippery slopes, strawmen, and logical fallacies in all of his debates. He's a theologian wordsmith, nothing more. He's gained publicity simply off of people refusing to debate him.

You keep saying I'm itching for a fight and you accuse me of name-calling... I haven't called you a single name, so playing the victim isn't working.

I don't want tangible proof... I simply want you to explain what faith is to you. It's not like I'm pulling your teeth.

My opinion of Graham, Falwell, etc...is they are cons running a racket. I have faith this is so. So don't bother arguing it, any evidence presented otherwise or asking me for reasons outside of my faith is insulting.

Dawkins. It's is not even a contest. TV evangelicals are a complete sham. I hope the Christians on the board can understand that. If you seek any creditably in your faith, you should run from them as fast as you can.

Very Socratic.

Notice how all the christians seem to be avoiding this comparison because they know the atheists are right?

ETA: I don't know why I said this as I myself am a Christian.

You're right, you didn't start this whole exchange out by calling me a turtle lipped dipstick. I'm sorry you feel so threatened by what I have to say. You've asked me what my faith means, and I've explained it despite you're rude tone and aggressive stance.
