Rick Barnes has never made the second weekend at Texas and Tennessee without a top 20 offense. The 18-19 team is the only team he has had at Tennessee finish in the top 20 in offensive efficiency. They made the sweet 16 barely.

I haven't seen the basketball forum have this many posts in years... how many of you have only watched 5 games this year ?

It's always been pretty easy to see imo that the offense was going to lack since prior to the season. Looking at the roster there isn't anyone who stands out but Santi maybe. JJJ is a wash. too many injuries and he's been here to long as a McDonald all American. We all know what Uros can do and we all were shocked when Nkam dropped 26 the other night.

ZZ is all our favorite player and the only true dog we all had in our minds going into the season. Seeing positives from the young freshman was a hope but nothing you can base your season on.

Rick barnes is the reason the was a #2 next to our name this year.

We've had more exciting teams..

historically rated defense is also on the other end.. Like best ever.. like EVER ( Rick Barnes)

They need to practice shooting the ball. From every point on the floor...over and over. They play defense good, but can't make shots consistently. Mental thing ?

I think not,,, just don't have the natural ability the really good shooters start with and then learn techniques to more prefect the ability.

So really good shooters don't want to play defense?

Maybe that is legit and CRB can't gain traction outside of Kennedy Chandler, Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson.

I think Barnes is a basketball genius but the weakest point on his offense every year is his players inability to drive and create fouls. It's something that is taught and teams that are good at it are hard to beat. You can play good defense and create trips to the foul line no matter how well you are shooting the 3. To have so few fouls in a half last night displays this weakness in full. Peanut butter and Jelly were the exception.

Considering the mega-millions Rick is being paid, if he can't figure out how to generate an offense that complements our, usually reliable, defense, then he should at least be able to hire an assistant or two who can coach an SEC-level offense. The ones he has on board now don't seem to be very useful. Maybe it's time for a staff shake up. Refusal to replace unproductive staffers is one thing that got him fired at Texas.

Barnes offensive philosophy is play inside out, meaning get the ball to a big and the defense will either collapse on him or he will have a shot if they don't. If they collapse on him, he passes it out to a shooter for an open shot. The problems are: 1)If your big is not a good scorer, the opposition won't collapse and he either misses a shot or turns it over trying to pass out, 2) if your big is a good shooter but not a good passer, they collapse on him and and he can't pass the ball out to get an open jumper.

In other words, in Barnes offense, he must have a big who is a terrific scorer and a terrific passer. He has consistently not had that kind of quality big on his rosters. And that is the primary reason his offenses are mediocre.

He had one that could've been at least serviceable until the guy decided acting like a punk was a better use of his time and efforts instead of getting better at the game.

That's pretty close to how I see Barnes offense. He seems driven to focus on getting the ball inside. That may work on some teams, but when it doesn't work, they have no back up. And the big man doing that over the shoulder fade away hook shot like Jabbar used to do in ---to me that is not a high percentage shot. And we can't make shots outside, which you need to do to pull out defense guys from the perimeter. The game plan for whoever we play is to just clog up the middle and it works too often.

That's what Calipari did to us, and it worked.

Barnes is a very good coach but his team's offensive performances leave a lot to be desired. There is no easy answer as to why but it seems to a constant theme for most of his teams in the past.

Grant Williams wasn't too shabby.

According to the experts, UT has the best defense ever recorded in recent metrics.

Will this be the case as of March 15?

Rick Barnes knows way more about basketball that I ever will, but it doesn’t look like his motion offense creates very many driving lines without a really good post player. Grant drew a lot of attention and made it easier for the guards to attack off the dribble.

Maybe I’m wrong and that’s just a product of not having the quickest back court in the world. Just seems like other teams’ guards have more room to operate off the bounce.

Never bash players. Million dollar coaches though… Rick Barnes is exactly what you see. Can’t close. Won’t take you to anything near a title. He has had resources at two different stops. The proof is there.

CRB may never take us to a Championship. There is only one champ every year. Not only do you have to be really good but you also have to be very lucky to become the champ.

Considering the state of Vol BB before CRB (except for a couple of decent years with Pearl), I am happy with where the program is at. We are a very competitive team and other teams know they have to deal with the Vols. Of course, I would love to see the Vols cutting down the nets but I can be happy watching them play the CRB brand of defense, too.

We get open looks all the time, guys just can’t hit shoots.. That’s why when we get hot we can beat anyone in the country. But when we are cold we can’t beat anyone

Without a top 20 Offense the only way we make the E8 is for us to get in a bracket draw with a good 1st matchup, then our next opponent be a mid-Major that unexplainably upset a top team e.g. Mercer over Duke the one tourney. Then would have to happen again in next bracket or ORN would need to unexplainably have a > 20-point/10 rebound game. To me this has been a fun year to watch, and I never do look at what happens in the NCAA tournament to set my demeanor. The chances are slim to win the SEC tournament also and I have the same demeanor. Although we did win it last year, my thoughts if you don't win it, you are better off losing the 1st game and resting for the NCAA tournament. GBO

Agreed. And you’re right, Grant especially was the lone exception and they were on fire that year. Plus, he hit his free throws.
