Recruiting is a huge part of coaching. So is hiring a staff. So is developing players. He has his methods on the bench and it doesn’t include drawing attention to himself, acting like a clown, or harassing officials. Sometimes the ball takes bad bounces. Sometimes teenagers and players in their early 20s aren’t able to be coached.
Not surprised that you’re throwing shade on a coach that’s just had possibly the best recruiting hall ever by a TN coach. I’m fine with him simply rolling out a basketball and sitting back and watching at this point. The program is moving forward. It’s not going to be a straight line.
Rather get top recruits and be relevant every year rather than waiting every 2-3 years for a tournament appearance like we used to. The more times we make a tournament then the better chance that we get an easier draw and go on a run.
Would you guys rather have a final four appearance but only make the post season every couple of years or what we have since Barnes was announced as our coach?
That’s well thought out. The comparison I was attempting to make was Frank Martin at South Carolina. They do have a final four appearance but haven’t made the tournament since then. They also have recruited towards the bottom of the sec. I think I rather have the trajectory of our program than a final four that would never happen again. It's tough. I appreciate having fond memories and getting to see guys grow into success. That's what I most prefer. Chris Lofton for four years was amazing. Heck, that whole era - JaJuan Smith, Dane Bradshaw, Wayne Chism, Bobby Maze, all of those guys who came in and played for the Vols ... I know Tennessee didn't win any national titles with them but I think of them as Volunteers and I love those teams to death. So many great memories. That blowout of Texas in Austin to "announce" their arrival. Dane Bradshaw's layup in that UT-Florida game, Smith's 360 jam on Memphis, Lofton over Durant. And not just that era. There's others. Watching Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield grow into dominant college players - Admiral shooting Tennessee to the win Gonzaga, Grant gator chomping after the big win, the huge SEC semi-final win ... I appreciate getting to ride along with those teams and those players. Fulkerson willing Tennessee to that win at Rupp, that sort of stuff. I want to win national titles, that's always the goal, but I also appreciate getting to ride-or-die with the guys who want to be at Tennessee.
One-and-done players are part of the landscape. It is what it is. I don't begrudge them, I don't think any less of them as players or whatever. But I think they're easy to forget. They come and they go. Like an extended AAU trip. Part of why I feel for Kentucky fans. They don't even know half the guys who've played for them this decade. I have Kentucky relatives, diehard basketball fans, who just don't care about the particular kids anymore. They like the wins, but every year it's a totally new roster and they just don't invest in it much. Why? They'll just be gone next year. I wouldn't want that to be how it is.

Also I am one of the few here that is a fan of the NBA. I’m really excited about more UT players being big time pros in the NBA. It’s kinda sucks to just follow Tobias Harris, Jrich, Grant, and even CJ Watson from the early 2010s. I know we had Bernard King and others but I have no memory of them.

I wish I got to experience those days. I started watching during the Kobe/Lebron era. Favorite player was Derrick Rose (I know...Memphis). But definitely can’t wait to see Keon, Springer, Chandler, BHH, and more in the years to come. There are a bunch of good posters that follow the NBA closely. I’ve lost interest since the days of the Bird Celtics, Magic Lakers, Dr J 76ers, Isaiah and crew Pistons, and King. Partly because of the dearth of TN players. I might soon be back on Board with the NBA since TN could be representing 10 or more spots before too long.
It's perfectly fair to expect results in March from Barnes. This team should have a sweet 16 floor barring injuries. It returns a great mix of veteran players and highly ranked freshmen and it appears to have addressed the need at PG, for a shooter, and in the post in a major way.
The only point of signing great classes is to go out and win in March with them.
Yeah, and you’re fine with him “hitting it out of the park” even if it doesn’t include the month of March, you know, when it matters most.

You sir are a rarity. Someone who actually knows what he’s talking about.Did you notice that Pearl's teams played the same flex offense every year? They'd run nearly the same flex play every time down the court, then a ball screen at 10 on the shot clock half the time when they couldn't find an opening running the same play they did the last time down the floor. Do you know what Auburn is running now? It's still the flex! Both coaches have better or worse offensive performance based on the abilities of the players that they recruit, which isn't a huge revelation. If you like Pearl's offense more you're fond of one old offense rather than another.
You’re correct. Barnes CONSTANTLY complains about guys passing up open jumpers in every presser. He’s fine with 3’s as long as the post players are getting touches.I really want you to do a deep dive on this and give me some details. You can't possibly have such a strong opinion based on superficial reasons. You can come on here with a strong opinion but if you don't have anything to back it up, nobody has any reason to take you seriously. Might as well be shouting into the void.
