Ricky Gervais monologue at Golden Globes. "You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world."

My point was the jokes were not simply a one off routine for the people present.

Making free speech and PC arguments/jokes on a podcast is totally different from telling a room full of Hollywood elites that their self-righteousness is hypocritical, IMO.

How was he suppressing speech?

He was dissuading people from speaking their minds. There was no force involved, but he wants them to STFU. I'm not saying he's an opponent of free speech, I'm only meaning to illustrate how far this was from being about Hollywood's issues with speech.

But I think he is smarter than that... He knows that people in the entertainment industry are going to use their pedestal to speak their minds on social issues that are important to them. He has hosted several award shows. His telling them to shut up wasn't going to keep Patricia Arquette from speaking her mind, he would have to be very arrogant to think that. I don't believe that he is. He goes for being 'uncomfortably funny'.

That is how he always comes across... but he isn't serious about it.

He knowingly took them to a place where they would be uncomfortable, saying something that's 100% true and scathing, he'll probably never host anything like this again (and he knows it), but he was just playing?

That is his act and what he is trying to do. Since he does it with every audience, I don't think it's sincere.

If you can find something that scathing that he said to a room full of people the remark was intended for, I'll be fkn surprised.

I've just seen his show. You can find some of his stuff on YouTube. Take a look some time. Sometimes he goes too far... but for the most part, his "the truth hurts" insult humor, is not bad.

Here's the 2016 GG monologue. He starts off with an offhand comment about the audience being sexual deviants, but there is nothing like what he did last night where he put the whole room on blast. Funny seeing Weinstein there.

It's his act... I think some of you are taking it too seriously, but that is your business. I really don't care.
