Riddle me this

could it be depth ? Since we dont have a 3 deep ...we basically have a couple of freshmen and some guys that are for intents and purposes squad guys serving as our depth on the Dline. It would stand to reason that this is a major issue for failure going into the 2nd quarter and after half time. Our backers ...who are speed challenged anyways...have very little quality depth either .

Since our offense cannot generate drives ...the D is finding themselves on the field for 80 snaps a game. Most good teams like to keep that number below 50.

Considering that our D are absorbing inordinate amounts of snaps ...I find it amazing that we are executing as well as we are

Please go back and watch a replay of last year's Georgia game before trying to assert that the tackling has not improved somewhat.

You really think our d is as bad as last year? You have a very poor memory.

Statistically it's almost as bad as last years. That's not the whole story, I mean it has improved a little. We have gotten some good turnovers against the weaker teams, but we still get burned just as bad as last year.

No, sorry to be misleading. Its obvious our D is better, it just seems like our TACKLING skills are the same.

Gotcha. I do feel the two are related. If the tackling is the same then the defenses are pretty much similar. Unless, you are saying that last year we were so far away from a ball carrier that we didn't have a chance to make many tackles, but the chances we did have we weren't very good like this year. I see your point if that's what you were saying. I still think we are better. I just think we are dealing with a lot of players that Dooley incorrectly evaluated, therefore we struggle with athletic teams because we lack athleticism. Be patient, they are coming.

Exactly! Our defense is vastly improved all across the board. Is it SEC quality yet? No, however, this recruiting class and the '15 class hold vital pieces to grow (rebuild) our program with.

2013

Tennessee - Total Defense - Rank 86 in NCAA

Worst in SEC East.

2012

Tennessee - Total Defense - Rank 107 in NCAA

Worst in SEC East

Statistically better in total NCAA however practically they are still dead last in SEC East.

I wonder if any of the younger VolNation members would even know the name of this actor?

Defensive scheme, system, and coaching are better. Still lack the team speed and depth, which affects those rankings. Last year we had a great offense, and NC State instead of Oregon! Just sayin.

So what about the TD pass Mizzou had where the WR didn't have any UT defenders in the same zip code? Is that talent disparity? (No) Or a safety with poor football IQ? Or bad coaching?

I'm pretty sure our coaches didn't teach the players to bust coverage like that! Players just made the wrong reads.

The Vols just played the No. 1 and No. 9 teams in the nation on the road in back to back weeks. Bama scored about their season average of 46. Missouri was held to their 2nd lowest point total of the year. You can't beat anyone scoring 10 and 3 points respectively. The special teams and defense are the bright spots for this team. The offense just can't get it in the end zone and have turned it over and over and over. That puts additional strain on the defense as they stay on the field, often short fields, while Worley's leg gets tired from punting after another 3 and out. Its a new era if you can't score 30+ a game you will lose more than you win.

Thanks...I just didnt have the energy to make this post...You are correct...

Silly OP, don't you understand that you can't have a team that plays solid disciplined football until you have 2 or 3 recruiting classes signed?

Blown assignments are a reflection of coaching and gameday preparation IMO

I agree that players and coaches are responsible, however, I have never in my life watched a team play perfect football. Just because a player misses an assignment, doesn't mean the coach taught it wrong or failed to prepare for it. Coaches would never yell at their players if they did everything that the coaches said. Coaches also don't teach a star player to have 4 false starts in one game! Offense is just as responsible for these losses.

I think some of our tackling issues go hand in hand with our speed issues. It seems like our guys just can't get to the ball carrier quick enough to hit him square half of the time.

Yes and no.

That same thing happened in the Bama game. Coleman covered underneath and thought the Safety was going to pick up his man.

The Safety was lost and didn't pick up his man.

Okay, at that point, you can blame the player.

Then it happens again 7 days later.

Uh oh.
