RIP Jerry West, Mr Basketball

I had a friend who said his dad had a long conversation with Jerry West at a job site in West Virginia and didnt even know who he was.

He just thought he was some rich dude.
Jerry was one of my young years heroes. Oscar, Russell, Baylor, Wilt, watched them all in the one game game each week that was televised.
In the late 70s, when Jerry was coaching the Lakers, I was trapped in Seattle airport due to fog...so was Jerry and part of the Lakers team. No security back then and I walked over to the LA flight, onto the plane and introduced myself to Jerry. He stood up, shook my hand and told me to sit down. Nicest guy you could ever meet. Not one ounce of pretense or posturing at all. Greatest experience I ever had fogged in at Seattle.

But did you put it on the birth certificate? Meh.

No. Already decided on a specific Angel's name for my son's first name though we did a more Gaelic spelling and he was always getting my middle name, just like my daughter got named after a young celebrity crush for me who my wife also loves and then she got her mother's middle name .

If I am not mistaken he played for West Virginia in the Inaugural game of the old Armory Field House which eventually became Stokely Athletic Center.
Don’t even want to think how I remember this but I think he scored 44 that night against the Vols! How can I remember that for 65 years?

Super smooth and clutch player for the Lakers when I watched them play the Knicks and Celtics as a kid. My father attend UTK and said he saw him play in 1958 at UT and West was the best college player he ever saw in person.
