The reason Democrats lost the House is because Republicans only needed to pick up 6 seats. By any standard of measurement for the party out of power, the Republican gains in the House were modest for a mid-term election year.

The Republicans only needed to gain 6 seats in order to take control of the House. Nobody ever doubted that would happen. The party in power never gains seats in the House during the mid-terms. It is rare that the party in power gains a seat in the Senate, but that will be the case if Raphael Warnock wins the Senate runoff in Georgia.

The Democrats gained 40 seats in the House in 2018, for example. Republicans gained 62 seats in the House back in 2010.

Those results are far more typical of the gains which are typically seen by the party not in control of the Presidency. That was the sort of gain which Republican pundits on Fox News were forecasting two weeks ago. Instead, the Republicans will only gain 11 seats in the House. That is a pathetic showing. You can blame a portion of the Republican underperformance on the concern over abortion rights, but the much bigger factor, was the poor quality of candidates that Republicans nominated during their primary elections, at the behest of Donald Trump.
