You obviously haven't been watching the images of the storm. If it went directly N. right now, the eastern edge would be over the Atlantic coast of GA and the western edge would be over the MS river. IOW, this thing is about 40% of our country wide.
So, if it follows its most likely path, it will not only devestate Houston, but the already Katrina-crippled areas of LA, MS and AL are going to get smashed by the eastern edge. The most dangerous edge. The one that swings in directly from the sea with the highest winds, storm surge, thunderstorms, and tornado spawning super-cells.
So unless Rita takes the extreme western-most of its projected path, Baton Rouge is going to get clobbered really hard. On the other hand, if it does, there will only be high winds, rain, and perpetual severe thunderstorm and tornado watches.
