SEC BCS dominance killing cyclical theory; more Mailbag - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

Stewart, I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. My understanding was that USC had restrictions on the number of recruits it could take (20, pending its NCAA appeal). However a cursory look at the number of kids planning to commit to USC this coming year shows 23. Am I misunderstanding USC's penalties or have they figured out a way around the recruiting restrictions?
-- Michael, Cleveland

The latter -- though it's perfectly legal and will only work this year. Scholarships are based on the academic calendar, not the football calendar. Because USC only signed 18 players last year, 14 of whom enrolled last fall, it can count its nine early enrollees in the current class toward the 2010-11 school year. Should the original ruling stand, the 15-player limit goes into effect in 2011-12 and will include all players that enroll this fall (which may include some recruited walk-ons). It still can't go over the NCAA-imposed 75-scholarship limit for its overall roster.

They are trying to get 10-12 in as EE so they can back count half from last cycle. They lost players to the NFL and tranfers. Nothing the NCAA can do about this cycle so they could have a class of 25.

Kiffin and Ed O works the system.

Limit of 15 initial grants-in-aid and 75 total grants in football for each of the 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. They have 107 on roster for next year and 23 in recruiting class already. I'm unclear, can they only sign 15 new scholarships and have 75 Total on scholarship? Please inform me!

Sorry didn't see them, search would probably help though. Still 15 new scholarships probably means some they have recruited will probably be shopping for a scholly after NSD.

CLK and coach O are masters at pushing the rules. Hope someone in the NCAA compliance office is spending half the amount of time checking on USC as they are us.

Again, because they're in the process of appeal, they scholarship limit has been pushed back a year.

I thought USC lost scholarships as part of the Reggie Bush incident yet I see where they have as many as 24 commits to date. how will this play out?

They are appealing and recruiting as if they expect to win it appears. We will see.

They are back counting. That Staff is the masters of toeing the line with the NCAA. They can only do this for this year only. If I am a USC fan I would be nerves with this staff in place.

This doesn't even really need to be discussed. Regardless of NCAA penalties and the future effect on their program, he went 7-5 with a team loaded with talent in a conference where Oregon and Stanford were the only two other teams worth mentioning, and lost to Notre Dame...

This may have been discussed once before, I could find any other post, sorry if so.

But how can USC have 26 players comitted? What happen to the reductions?
Guess they think they will win the appeal process.
I know their staff can recruit, no doubt.

But Dang.:eek:hmy:

Not near as hard to get kids to USC because of the in state recruits.. We don't have that luxary.

They are back counting like 8-10 players is what i've heard.

i feel like they should have an extra year of bowl ban because of this. If they can bring in as many as they want this year, the next two smaller classes will have barely any negativity around them from the bowl ban because that class will never have to deal with it. idk if what im saying makessense or not... does it?

yeah..it makes sense..
still stinks though..I just hope they lose their appeal.

As long as they don't win any championships while Kiffin is there, that would make me happen./
