Howell is the kind of guy I'm comfortable coming in as a scrappy 6-10 minute guy. 10 tops, btw. I just don't think he has the athleticism to play 30+ in the SEC.
Excellent analysis.

What is your status on big men? I said over and over here last season (and before the Gators' tourney run) that the NCAA tournament is all about size and athleticism in the post. You MUST get offensive and defensive rebounds. You MUST shut down the forward play of opposing teams, especially Big East and the like. I know very little about your team this year, but until I see signficant and repeat evidence that you have made an enormous improvement in the inside game, I cannot agree you are a F4 contender.

Witness what happened to you last year. Get into the toruney and get banged around. The perimeter play let you down in one game and, bang, you are out. Same with Villanova. Same with a lot of teams.

What's the real scoop on inside presence?

Our inside game will be wayyyy better. We bring back our starting center and bring in one of the top PFs and one of the top Cs out of HS. The center is Wayne Chism and his numbers from his physical were 6'9" 246 with an SEC ready body. He is a rebounding machine and has a good shooting touch. Duke Crews is the PF and hasn't had his physical yet but everyone that has saw him on campus has said he fits the bill. He is listed in databases at 6'7" 230. He is a pogo stick(ala Tyrus Thomas). We also have another C that was redshirting last year in Damien Harris. He is 6'11" and prolly around 270. He may get a few minutes here and there. We also bring in a 6'5" wing, 6'4" combo guard, 6'3" combo guard, and a 6'6" 1/2/3.

Put it this way...UT will have the 3rd best post play in the SEC behind LSU and Florida. Chism and Crews are that good. The combination of Wingate, Crews, Chism will be much better than anything you saw us put out on the floor last season lawgator1.

Alabama has pretty good inside players. I'm not that high on LSU's post game. Lazare, Rolle, and Davis are good, but I don't see any standout defenders in that group. I'd rank it UF, UAT, UT, then LSU.

Magnum Rolle and Tasmin Mitchell will be two of the breakout players in the SEC this season.

Yeah, but Tasmin is more of a wing than a post and Rolle is too skinny for me. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Well that's great news for you. Look at this year's F4. Size matters.

Of the last 10 NCAA Tournament winners, 5 have had little or no post game. 2 have been built around their inside players. The other three had varying degrees of production from their inside players. All had very good to great guard play.

Good article. More talent is always good. More depth is good as well, especially for the style of play that Coach Pearl likes. I think the future looks bright for Tennessee basketball. I'm not thinkin' 'bout the Final 4 yet, though.

Enjoyed the article. However, I can't see the concern about the PG. CJ is a class guy and I appreciate everything he did while here. If you will look at the scoring opportunities that were available last year, you will see our pg had to be pretty savy. Lets see who can score, Lofton, Lofton, Lofton. Even I as a not too knowlegeable coach would have had my game plan to stop Tennessee would be to stop Lofton. This year the pg has many more opportunities to distribute the ball to many more scoring threats. So, don't worry about the person who will be giving the ball to the scorers, notice I said scorers. It will be a lot easier to score and that takes pressure off the pg. Class dismissed. Go Vols.
