Rockies vs. Padres

I think it's a toss up, but I'm cheering for the Rockies because I want to see Todd Helton experience the playoffs.

Peavy is one heck of a pitcher and I would normally say that gives him the fathers an edge, but Fogg has been on fire lately.

Rockies O vs. Pads Pitching. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but it just scares me because the Rockies ride has to end sometime, right? That being said, The Pads '' O is atrocius. The Rockies have enough pitching to keep their bats at bay.

still playing. on a sidenote, If Holliday goes to bat again without a hit, Chipper might win the batting title. very interesting

This whole strategy of saving your closer for a save situation is pretty questionable. I know it's what everybody does, but if I were a Padres fan, I'd hate for Colorado to score and end my season with Hoffman still sitting out there in the bullpen.

it's a double edged sword though. You use him two innings without scoring, he's done. what good does that do you?

If that happens, then he at least got in the game. You don't go into the offseason after losing an extra-innings game in which your best relief pitcher didn't pitch at all.

If I'm Bud Black, then I use Hoffman at some point when the situation warrants it -- a couple of guys on, or the heart of the Rockies' order coming up, or something. I don't just let him sit out there hoping for a save situation that may never come.

the padres are built on pitching. So far his plan is working. I bring my closer, one of the best in the game, when I need him to secure victory. It's a time proven method.

I just did the math and it wouldn't be enough.

Holliday would finish at .3375
Jones already finished at .3372

It's not quite time-proven; it's just managing by conventional wisdom. Just because just all managers do it this way doesn't mean it's the best way to do it.

I'd argue that the existence of the save statistic has caused almost all managers to completely mismanage their bullpens. The best relief pitcher is now called a "closer," and his job has now become so narrowly defined that it's basically just to compile lots of saves. So now the best relief pitcher doesn't come into tie games, doesn't come into situations in the 7th or 8th with runners on, etc., but yet he comes in all the time in the 9th inning with a 2- or 3-run lead. It's not maximizing the value of a guy like Hoffman to use him only in such a narrowly circumscribed role.

If I were Bud Black, I'd use Hoffman whenever a good situation warranted it, let him go a couple of innings, and then if you need someone else to finish the game later, maybe let Greg Maddux or one of the other starters do it. I would not want to go down with that particular bullet left in the chamber.

Of course, now it looks like it's going to work out for Black. It doesn't change my basic point -- it would have been really easy for Colorado to bloop a hit two innings ago, causing San Diego to head home without Hoffman breaking a sweat.

relying on a starter to come in and save the game? insanse. A. it'd take forever to warm up. B. that pitcher would be completely out of his element. C. the pads only get one day of rest, it would suck to wear out your pitching staff before the actual playoffs begin.

You didn't watch the last game of the 2001 World Series, I assume.

The Padres are already screwed pitching-wise by having to burn Peavy in this play-in game.

you give me one instance. I can give you hundreds where this situation has worked. besides, the world series you don't have to worry about protecting your arms. they have the whole offseason to rest
