Roe vs Wade Overturned

Kavanaugh Gave Private Assurances. Collins Says He ‘Misled’ Her.

There is one Republican who doesn't benefit politically from this development. Polls in Maine show that voters were strongly opposed to Roe v Wade being overturned. Susan Collins would be in some trouble right now if she was up for re-election in November. She voted in favor of both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. She is trying to say that Kavanaugh lied to her. She probably won't run in 2026. She will be 74 then, anyway.

John Roberts lied to everyone when he claimed to be competent and I am not convinced SS even has a law degree so I can live with it

My bet is she isn't getting replaced. This isn't good for her but she is a long way off to re-election. And incumbents always have the upper hand
Long time from now... a lot can change, but she is taking a beating on the homefront right now, and she knows it. That's why we're seeing this backlash at Kavanaugh.

I think this will be her last term.

Don't disagree about this being her last term. As you mentioned she's old.

“Gumnt bad” isn’t a valid position. CMS is approaching insolvency because of two simple reasons: too many users and not enough payors, and excessive costs charged by providers and pharma.

I love it when people say “I want to keep my HMO.” Those people have typically not endured the battle of denied coverage for seemingly arbitrary rationale. I’ve witnessed people maintain that line all the way from a life a comfort to becoming a bankrupt charity case with a single diagnosis. Too many times, actually.
Government bad is a valid position when it is actually bad. MDC patients get markedly worse coverage and treatment options than anyone else. Yet there is a large group of fools that want everyone to get that crappy care.

But back to the original point. States will be able to navigate the SC ruling. And so will providers.

“Suction Curettage: between 6 to 14 weeks after LMP
This is the most common surgical abortion procedure. Because the baby is larger, the doctor must first stretch open the cervix using metal rods. Opening the cervix may be painful, so local or general anesthesia is typically needed. After the cervix is stretched open, the doctor inserts a hard plastic tube into the uterus, then connects this tube to a suction machine. The suction pulls the fetus’ body apart and out of the uterus. The doctor may also use a loop-shaped knife called a curette to scrape the fetus and fetal parts out of the uterus. (The doctor may refer to the fetus and fetal parts as the “products of conception.”).

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E): between 13 to 24 weeks after LMP
This surgical abortion is done during the second trimester of pregnancy. At this point in pregnancy, the fetus is too large to be broken up by suction alone and will not pass through the suction tubing. In this procedure, the cervix must be opened wider than in a first trimester abortion. This is done by inserting numerous thin rods made of seaweed a day or two before the abortion. Once the cervix is stretched open the doctor pulls out the fetal parts with forceps. The fetus’ skull is crushed to ease removal. A sharp tool (called a curette) is also used to scrape out the contents of the uterus, removing any remaining tissue.

Dilation and Extraction (D&X) (partial-birth abortion): from 20 weeks after LMP to full-term
This procedure takes three days. During the first two days, the cervix is stretched open using thin rods made of seaweed, and medication is given for pain. On the third day, the abortion doctor uses ultrasound to locate the legs of the fetus. Grasping a leg with forceps, the doctor delivers the fetus up to the head. Next, scissors are inserted into the base of the skull to create an opening. A suction catheter is placed into the opening to remove the brain. The skull collapses and the fetus is removed.”

Read this. If you support this you support the butchering and dismembering of babies. There are no other options or other viable opinions. Face it. Admit it. And stop it.

Praise God Roe was overturned. Praise God many states have abortion as illegal right now. And hopefully the rest follow.

Republicans will not be satisfied with "leaving it up to each state." Red states will try and extend their reach, and impose their will upon blue states. The next step for Republicans will be to impose laws prohibiting their citizens from traveling out of state to receive an abortion. This will, of course, be challenged and end up in the Supreme Court.

Removing federal abortion-rights protections may spark new legal fights between states

And the reciprocal is somehow not comprehensible? You don’t think that big money blue state donors (NY, CA, MA, etc) will try and affect elections that will “impose laws” in red states?

Btw, neither is right.

And Democrats are already not satisfied with "leaving it up to each state". They always want to use the federal government to impose their will.

As for red states prohibiting citizens from traveling to other states to receive an abortion, IF that happens, I'm sure that would be challenged and found to be un-Constitutional.

This idea that SCOTUS somehow made an unreasonable decision is absurd. The Constitutional argument for kicking it to the states is there, and strong. Much stronger than the original reasoning for Roe, which even RBG acknowledged was judicial activism.

And as another poster has already acknowledged, both sides will attempt to influence the other. It's never the one-way street some like to imply it is.

Personally, my hope is that eventually states will hammer out fair abortion laws. I don't think abortions should be banned, but I'm not against limits. Both sides need to approach this with reason, but reason is rarely found in politics.

On another note, why do you think Dem lawmakers are not attempting to pass legislation through Congress to legalize abortion at the federal level? They have control, but don't seem to be using it. Instead, their denouncing SCOTUS for not making law, which is of course the job of Congress, not the court.

What we need are rational and reasonable regulations regarding abortions.
It seems that it is not the abortions that we need to focus on but the criminals that buy murdered baby parts for profit. Take the profit and criminality out of the equation and they become safe but rare.

its pretty ironic (and hypocritical) that liberals are crying that government that government shouldnt tell a person what they can or cant do with their body but want universal healthcare so the government will tell you want you can or cant do with your body
I’m assuming you prefer a profit-based insurance conglomerate that has your best interests at heart when they tell you what you can and can’t do with your body? Lol
