Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival Cruise

I've been on 3 cruise lines - Carnival, Norwegian and Sea Dream

Carnival - It was cheap, but had a blast. We were with a group of people so that certainly helped with the fun times. I thought the food was fine. Best ever? Not close, but good selection all around and the main dining room I thought the food was good.

Norwegian - Hated it. Seems like everything was in disarray. It was an older crowd and there was alot of complaining. Getting off the ship was like a cattle call. The free food was horrible. Like school cafeteria bad. To get decent food, you had to go to one of the restaurants and pay a surcharge per person. On the plus side, there was a cool english style pub that had a decent beer selection (much better than Carnival). But I'll never book them again.

Sea Dream - Can't even compare it for relaxation. No shows because it is a small ship (maybe 70 couples). But the food and service are world class. All alcohol was included. Dinners were world class and included pretty high end wine. You could get off the ship and go with the chef to the local farmer's market to pick out the daily meals ingredients. Being a beer snob (who hates heineken), I actually wrote ahead of time to find out what selection of beer they had on ship. When I showed up, there was Leffe, Hoegarden (sp) and some other belgian beers in our mini fridge. They had purchased the beer on one of their stops. Not that Leffe is the end all in beer, but the fact they got it, put it in my cabin and always had it waiting at the bar was pretty stellar. Expensive cruise, but worth it.

I'm planning on going on a cruise by early in 2016. I haven't been on a cruise since the late 80's and I'm looking forward to it.

Well I waited too late it appears. The only cruise we could dcwork in was booked and airfare was over $1000 each so the cruise is out. Guess we'll do a drive somewhere trip. Any suggestions. Wife, two kids (19, 14). Live in Ktown.

When are you going? And for how long?

Not sure have any suggestions? We can leave Thursday and home Sunday. I would say a three hour radius.

Kids might not be thrilled, but what about Ashville, NC? The Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn? Parts of The Hunger Games was filmed there too.

Ever since the Hatfield & McCoy movie on History, I've wanted to do the tour up on the Kentucky/West Virginia border. That may only be a one day trip, but it could be cool.

I'm going on Carnival last week of May to DR, Aruba, Curaçao, and Grand Turk.

Grand Turk is basically a private island kind of stop. It was consistently rated low on cruise surveys and ships actually stopped going there. Then Carnival built the current docks and built a shopping village that includes a Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and a bunch of souvenir shops. Once passengers get back on the ships, shops close and buses roll up to take the workers home. There's a pool at JBs (with a swim up bar), a nice beach area and a wave machine if you want to hang 10. Stop at JBs for the first drink then stroll down the beach past the tethered iceberg to Jack's Shack. Better drinks, good food, half the price.

Bar & Grill Grand Turk - Home

Also, I found Trip Advisor to be a great resource when looking for suggestions in each location.

Edit: You guys already beat me to the punch with Jack's. Add my vote.

Isn't it kind of dangerous around the ABC islands(Aruba,Bonaire and Curacao)? Remember the Amy Bradley and Natalee Holloway cases? I've thought about going there but folks tell me how it's dangerous.

Carnival = Walmart on water

RCL was great years ago, but now only good. Princess is a better line in this category.

I though Royal was great. Not really sure how a cruise could be much better than my experience with them.

Isn't Princess owned by Carnival? Why would it be better than carnival?

Royal is great compared to Carnival. Princess is owned by Carnival, but its a tad more money for a lot nicer ship, a lot nicer food, and most importantly to me, a lot nicer class of people.

It's all in who they market to. Carnival is pretty impressive though at keeping ships afloat when the average guest is 300+ lbs.

I went on a Carnival cruise in the late 80s. The Dinners were really good but the breakfasts and lunches on the top deck sucked. Worst hamburgers ever
