The thing about Mason is that he isn't exactly a great coach by their standards. He's made a bowl 2 out of 5 years. I think even they would like to make bowls more often than that; Franklin helped permanently raise expectations for them and the money from the SEC has gone up in recent years.
The biggest reason he's safe is because he's 3-2 against Tennessee. Specifically, the 2016 and 2018 wins over us are what made him bowl eligible. Those were obviously huge wins for him.
Post-Franklin, I think they'd like to make bowls about half the time, perhaps a little more often. There are 40+ bowl games now and all you have to do to make one is go 6-6. That fact, combined with the increased money from the conference in recent years, I think has elevated their expectations a little bit. You can have a putrid conference record (win only 1 or 2 conference games) and still make one. They almost made a bowl last year with just one conference win. I honestly think Mason would be on the hot seat, perhaps fired, if he wasn't 3-2 against the Vols. Again, the wins over Tennessee this year and in 2016 were their sixth win in those years. If he loses just those two games against us, they have zero bowl berths under him.I think you're over-valuing their "standards". If anything, he is exactly meeting their standards. I think they are quite fine with making a bowl every 2 seasons or so, after going 26 years without making one. It's not like they have a rabid fanbase to appease. Even under Franklin they could only get about 30K to show up, and that was their best years in forever. There were a ton of empty seats Saturday and that's because UT fans didn't show up like they usually do.
And TBH I always thought he was kind of settling after they had Franklin. I don't recall Mason being some hot name or anything.
I hope Mason stays, but with the utter lack of support for football by the administration I understand why he may consider Colorado. Our administration is pathetic.
I think the question is...
What's the attraction with Mason? You take the fact the state of Colorado itself isn't a hot bed of recruiting (one 4 Star in the whole State), play in the same division as USCw, UCLA, Uah, Arizona and AZ State and really haven't had an up and up year in...a long time it adds up to "why Mason?"
Not saying he's a horrible coach, but one has to wonder why CU would gamble on a coach that really hasn't performed at his current location, much less how he would perform in a location without decent in state talent to recruit.
