Rumor: Mason to Colorado

Are you saying Vanderbilt could be looking for a new coach? Say what you want about Lane Kiffin at least someone wanted him enough to hire him away from us. Vanderbilt if this were to happen would have twice recently had coaches hired away because of what they did at that bargain basement football program.

It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't jump at a move. New AD incoming. The culture around athletics is worse than anything most here can imagine. I've had the chance to work with Mason one on one. He is a stand up guy. And for his sake hope another program comes calling.

The thing about Mason is that he isn't exactly a great coach by their standards. He's made a bowl 2 out of 5 years. I think even they would like to make bowls more often than that; Franklin helped permanently raise expectations for them and the money from the SEC has gone up in recent years.

The biggest reason he's safe is because he's 3-2 against Tennessee. Specifically, the 2016 and 2018 wins over us are what made him bowl eligible. Those were obviously huge wins for him.

Mason could pull off the unimaginable, beat Tennessee four straight years. He'll if he did that they should build him a statue and rename the stadium.
Why would he take the Colorado job? Money maybe, I see no other reason.

I can see Mason in Colorado. He recruits well in California. The stoners like him.

And assuming that he loses another bowl game, that will make five consecutive losing seasons for Mason at Vandy. He needs to beat the posse out of town.

3 wins vs UT and 2 bowl games....He's safe.

I think you're over-valuing their "standards". If anything, he is exactly meeting their standards. I think they are quite fine with making a bowl every 2 seasons or so, after going 26 years without making one. It's not like they have a rabid fanbase to appease. Even under Franklin they could only get about 30K to show up, and that was their best years in forever. There were a ton of empty seats Saturday and that's because UT fans didn't show up like they usually do.

And TBH I always thought he was kind of settling after they had Franklin. I don't recall Mason being some hot name or anything.

Post-Franklin, I think they'd like to make bowls about half the time, perhaps a little more often. There are 40+ bowl games now and all you have to do to make one is go 6-6. That fact, combined with the increased money from the conference in recent years, I think has elevated their expectations a little bit. You can have a putrid conference record (win only 1 or 2 conference games) and still make one. They almost made a bowl last year with just one conference win. I honestly think Mason would be on the hot seat, perhaps fired, if he wasn't 3-2 against the Vols. Again, the wins over Tennessee this year and in 2016 were their sixth win in those years. If he loses just those two games against us, they have zero bowl berths under him.

They were incredibly lucky to get a coach like Franklin. At the time he was an up and comer and proved to be way above their pay grade (literally and figuratively), which is why he promptly left when Penn St came calling. I think the only reason why Tennessee didn't pursue him after Dooley was fired is because he was Vandy's coach, and it was too much of a blow to the ego. Mason was a really good hire by their standards. He was David Shaw's DC at Stanford before Vandy.

Mason’s done a much better job than I expected. He’s had Vandy playing pretty tough this year. There were at least 2 games that probably should have gone their way.

I hope Mason stays, but with the utter lack of support for football by the administration I understand why he may consider Colorado. Our administration is pathetic.

Lol. If you want to see what a truly pathetic administration looks like, then look no farther than Knoxville. We wrote the manual for AD screw ups.

I think the question is...

What's the attraction with Mason? You take the fact the state of Colorado itself isn't a hot bed of recruiting (one 4 Star in the whole State), play in the same division as USCw, UCLA, Uah, Arizona and AZ State and really haven't had an up and up year in...a long time it adds up to "why Mason?"

Not saying he's a horrible coach, but one has to wonder why CU would gamble on a coach that really hasn't performed at his current location, much less how he would perform in a location without decent in state talent to recruit.

I think Mason would be a good fit for Colorado. Its closer to home for him and he spent a lot of time recruiting out west. Plus, I think he is a really quality person.
