Rumor on potential starting lineup

Who are the shooters on that starting five?

I don't know which starting 5 you mean, but HOPEFULLY Hopson, Tatum, and Harris.

I'd even take one of those as a legit good shooter, and let the other 2 keep hovering around 36-37%, and be happy.

If they're all inconsistent, then we may struggle to produce points in the half-court again. Too easy to pack it in against a team that can't hit.

I should have clarified. I didn't say this would be the starting lineup on November 12th. This is the starting 5 that the staff would prefer. And this will more than likely turn out to be our best starting 5 at each position.

I agree, but oddly enough, Harris did run at the 3 in practice this week with Tatum out.

Still, I think he's a permanent 4 this year.

hmm.. wonder why McRae, Hopson or Woolridge didn't get time at the 3 while Tatum was out if Harris is a permanent 4...

That lineup is not being seriously considered at this point.

It's certain that Harris (or Maymon, for that matter) can play facing the basket (i.e., SF) on offense. What's not certain is that Harris can guard an opponent's 3.

Anyway, Maymon is out until mid-season, and the probably starting 5 in the meantime is

1: Goins
2: Hopson
3: Tatum
4: Harris
5: Williams

Now, what IS true is that Maymon is now considered by the coaching staff to be in the top 6. This is not exactly a well-hidden rumor, though...if you listen carefully to Pearl's media days interview and others since, you hear him hinting about this.

What does your starting lineup look like without Tatum by January?

McRae is too good not to play and Tobias' ball-handling must have greatly improved in order to play the 3. Not too mention that Pearl likes having a 4 who play that "point forward" position.

based on what? Did you see UT reach the elite 8 last season? How did they get there? You guys need to stop living in the past and realize that Pearl will not be running things exactly how he has in years before last.

I said towards the end of last season that Pearl was getting better at recognizing when he has to make adjustments to his coaching style. I think the tournament proved that as well. Pearl will have Tobias at the 3 as soon as Maymon gets in the flow of things. Goins probably will take this title, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tobias is our best perimeter defender this season.

Let's hope that doesn't happen to the kid. He's been hurt enough.

If he were to get hurt, then Woolridge, McRae, and Bone would fight over his position. Or they could move Hopson down to 3 (he's 6-7, after all) and play Golden or McBee or Bone at the 2. We have bodies...

Also, the staff would have to consider sliding Harris or Maymon up to the 3 if that happened, to get our best 5 on. But...after they toyed with it, I'm still not sure they'd do it in a game.

Goins, then Hopson, then probably Bone, then hopefully Tatum.

If Harris is a better perimeter defender than Tatum, we'll likely see some blow-bys.

Well, considering that Bradshaw and Ty Smith were point forwards that Pearl put there, and recruited Harris, who's college position predicted coming out was that he was going to be a POINT 4, I think it's safe to assume he will be a POINT 4.

If Goins and Bone are our PG's I think we could be in trouble.

Goins has a little bit of tournament experience but this wont be the first time we've lacked pg play. I remember games in a previous season in which Prince actually ran the point.

Who will be the backup PG?

Good question.

McBee, Golden, Bone all dabbling in backup PG at the moment, sounds like?

I guess Bone is the favorite, for his defense. He also doesn't turn the ball over and can hit the open shot.

Golden if you need something created out of nothing, perhaps?

If Bone is the back-up point, we will need someone else to run the half-court offense. He has no penetration skills and does not distribute the ball well. His best chance to help this team is at the 2. McBee would get eaten alive playing point---too slow, no penetration, and little distribution skills. It appears to me that Golden is far and away the best option for back-up point.

Bone can guard the opponent, can dribble the ball down the floor and get it to Hopson/Tatum/Harris. That's fine for a backup PG...you don't have to bring the backup in and ask him to go one-on-one to the hole.

In fact, on this team, the best thing the PG could do in most situations might be to get the ball to the talented scorers.

Now, if Goins ended up hurt, I think you would want someone who can create to play the position full-time. But for backup, Bone is fine.

All I can remember from Bone is his obvious discomfort handling the ball and pulling up his dribble after passing half-court. That is not what we need in a back-up point. I fully agree as to his defense---tops on the team at the guard position.
