Running game

To beat a good D like LSU's we need to connect on some homerun balls like in the Fiesta bowl to Peerless. It's hard to nickle and dime a good D.

Just stick to the game plan. Find their weakness, and exploit it. It's gotta be there somewhere. From what I've seen, it's over pursuit. Dinking and dunking kills over pursuit when done right.

Foster is more of a conventional runner who needs his o-line to bust open holes. That aint happenin. Coker, on the other hand, can use his speed to compensate for the lack of push by the o-line. You give him a crack and he can shoot through it, while foster, being a step slower (though not slow in a general sense) gets caught when that 1-second hole collapses.

There were several plays in the SC game where I thought a good back would have really made them pay. It was blocked, the hole was there, and Foster got tackled for about 6 yards.

I think Coker could have had 100 yards against them. Our lack of running game is not just the OL, but also the backs missing cut backs or a general lack of burst.

If you have a great back, you can have a great running game. The SEC is too good on defense with talent and scheme to stop the run these days to have a plodder back there. You need someone with some dynamics about them.

Good grief. Fans turn quickly, it seems. I can't believe how many posters on here were ready to proclaim Foster as UT's greatest back ever. Now it looks like everyone is ready to write him off. I don't think he's going to be another Jamal Lewis, but I don't think he's Jabari Davis, either. He'll be a good runner for us.

Yeah, he's a decent back, but he's not a game changer. Just because I or someone else might not think he is great doesn't mean piling on.

I just think Coker is in a different league.

He's fast, that's for sure. He sure has been hurt a lot. He's only done well in a handful of games. I'd say the jury is still out.

I agree tvolsfan,
I don't see it happening. LSU defense is every bit as tough as Florida's. We will be lucky to get 50 yards rushing.

The key today is protection and running the ball just enough to slow down that pass rush which has been the best in the SEC.

I think we will see a few trick plays, reverse's, misdirection stuff to be effective. We may even get a few good runs. But Ainge or Crompton have to have time to throw.

If Crompton plays i think we may see him running a little more. He reminds me of Shuler alot. What I mean by that is the way he is built and he seems to be a little quicker than Anige and looks to run a little more from what i have seen. Which isn't much. So who knows.

I know it hasn't been there all year, but if we ever needed a running game today's the day.

I think Crompton either starts, or gets significant playing time, and we have to be able to run the ball, if he has a chance to lead Tennessee to a win.

Were averaging 113 a game, so I hope we can get it all from one back, but if takes all 3 then so be it.

If Crompton plays and we have to have a running game we get blown out.

I think Crompton will do fine without changing much of the playbook. He has been around two years and taken alot of snaps in practice. I know that is not the same but I think he would know what is expected of him. And i think he wants the chance to show what he can do.

So you're saying if Ainge doesn't play D crumbles. Last time I checked Ainge didn't play D. Don't see a blowout happening with or without Ainge.

I didn't say anything about Ainge. What i said was if we have to have a running game with Crompton we will get blow out. I don't think we will get blown out but i don't think we will be able to run the football on LSU. Hell , we haven't ran on anybody besides Memphis.

I didn't say anything about D? Read the post dude.

You used word "blown out". Simple answer is I don't agree.

Didn't quite follow that.

All i am saying is if we have to have a running game we are going to get blown out. We haven't run the football all year it isn't going to start today agaist one of the top two or three Defense's in the Country.

I hope Ainge plays. I think if Crompton plays he will do fine. I don't think we will make as many plays with Crompton in the game as Ainge. But i think he is going to be a great QB. I am excited to see him. But we can't put him in and try to run the ball. We can't run. Whatever the reason. If he plays you can't be conservative and win. I think if Crompton plays and we don't change the play calling we still have a shot. That's all i am saying.

Georgia was supposed to have one of the best defenses in the country too. Crompton brings one thing Ainge doesnt, he can run himself which adds a wrinkle LSU may not be prepared for.

UGA just sucked. Hope though the Vols can make most of opportunities the LSU D gives them.

The point is maybe LSU will suck today too.

LSU has played both Aurburn and Flordia , they lost both, but if you watched those games you know one thing. They don't suck. And they won't suck today. It is just like any other team in the SEC if you don't play your best you are going to get beat. If we play well we have a good chance to get the win. If not we will lose.

Georgia hadn't played anyone before us.

There D will be solid, but if we can get Russell out of the pocket, and he makes some bad decisions our D could put a few points on the board ala Florida.

I've been thinking the same thing. Somehow, we've been able to come up with the turnovers lately - either through hard hitting or great CB play or just the ball bouncing the right way. Let's hope it bounces our way today.
