Running the football against Oklahoma

Honestly, I don't think our running game is that far away from being decent. Our O line is making the blocks up front, they are just consistently late scraping to pick up linebackers. If they can get that part down, I think we'll see a dramatic increase in efficiency of our running game. Probably won't happen against Oklahoma, but it is coming sooner or later.

I think CBJ has been using these first 2 games to test and teach our Oline with running up the middle. It's a work is progress, but needs lots of work still. I would assume they would try and do more running outside the box and possible screens and dump passes to Hurd in space this week. I also think they might try and have Worley move outside the pocket to get more time to throw the ball down field. jmo..

I seem to remember Derek Henry coming out in the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. If Saban had given him the ball more it would have been a closer game. Maybe Hurd makes the Oklahoma game his coming out party and rushes over 100 yards

It looks like to me that we have the running game to move the ball when the pass game is in play but not the running game to run out the clock. If the Vols are in it there may be some back and forth in the 4th quarter because of this. Would like to see the Vols in a position to salt the game away but I will say I do not think we have the ground game at this point for that to happen in Norman.

The one thing the Vol's must avoid at OK is an injury to Worley. I don't see the Vol's going bowling without Worley.

I really think if Tulsa can get 94 yards rushing, even with their QB accounting for -20, that we can obtain over 100 yards

After review of the film, the running game seems to be developing, but slowly. The first two games we have emphasized the inside zone which is fundamental and to be expected. However, verses Ark. St. we added counters, and a few stretch plays. I did not notice any power plays however. The problems appear to be timing, reading holes and linemen finishing blocks. We need more time due to youth and to experience playing together. Vol fans should appreciate that this line is more mobile than the line we have had the last few years. Success will come Butch Mahoney and Bajakian will make it work.

I'm hardly an expert on the read option but it appears to me Worley is handing the ball off even when the DE is crashing inside. Maybe that's by design to keep him healthy but if you're not going to block the DE and then not make him pay for losing contain by the QB keeping the ball why run the play?

Worley is playing well. The worst decision he has made in two games was the interception in the ASU game which was made off the back foot. He is playing like a senior and that bodes well for us.

OU has some young and inexperienced DBs. If they are giving out WRs big cushions look for a lot of quick throws and bubble screens. OU will try to take away the run and make Worley beat them. Of course everyone does. So I don't see them in press coverage outside.

uh, I believe what you want to do is run it four and five yards a pop continuously and successfully. I do believe that Ok game is going to be to run at us all day long. They will want to wear out our D and we will want to wear out theirs.

Don't think we are going to run the ball very well unless we

come out with some very creative play calling. I think OKs

DL is going eat that slow developing stuff up. If we want

To pass we are going to have to move the pocket and when

We don't we need to rely on the hot routes. Take your

Chances deep when they present themselves and get off

The field on third down on D and maybe we have a chance.

Run right at them. Knock the slobber out of their mouths. We need a balanced attack and the run game must do it's part.

Think about it. This game is a chance to really see what we're all about. The defense has looked pretty good so far, but they are going to really have a trial by fire this weekend. Which is a good thing, since we then have a week off before meeting the challenge of Gurley and the Bulldogs on the road for the sec opener. Great opportunity to get tested thoroughly before opening the conference schedule.

I agree....but given their line if they can pressure worley with 4, and still stop the run, it will be a long day. We do have great athletes....young but we got guys that are just as good of athletes....if ever there was a day to pull out the special play book this is it....one on one in the backfield, or a pass to Hurd on a draw and we could get some big plays.

Worley looks MUCH improved, and more relaxed, but this week will tell for sure, whether he is a born again ice man.
