Running The Table in '07

I'm no expert at defending the option, but the thing I'd like to see more of is us hitting the QB and worrying less about playing the pitch. If they're going to run the option, make them run the option. The first guy needs to quit defending it like a 2 on 1 fast break.

My limited understanding of defending the option is that you hit the quarterback and the pitchman on every play no matter what happens and you make the quarterback commit as soon as possible. If you take the initiative away from the quarterback, you take the option away.

I think the 07 schedule is favorable. Yes there are tough road trips... BUT...

UF's offense didn't beat UT. Their defense did and they stand to have very serious losses on D in their two deep. UT doesn't. The most significant loss on D has already been made- Harrell. UT will be the better defense next year.

UF loses 2 and maybe all three of their top 3 WR's this year. They lose a 4 year starter QB.

As for Tebow, running a limited set and getting hit 4 or 5 times per game is nothing like taking weekly abuse from SEC caliber defenders for 60 plays a game. He isn't nearly as fast as Vince Young or Michael Vick. He's big and strong but that doesn't make bruises not hurt or prevent joint injuries. Physically, he's Vince Young minus .25 seconds (or more) on his 40...

UT will return most of its offensive line 2 deep with experience. They will be deep and talented at RB even if they don't get one of the top prepsters. They are in the running for one of the top JUCO WR's and there is talent behind the top 3 this year. If Meachem comes back (which becomes more likely the more Ainge throws to Swain), the Vols will have one of the best offenses in college football.

Cal will play UT better but they will lose alot of talent on defense. I would be very surprised if Lynch comes back. Their passing game could cause problems though.

BTW, that Cal win looks better and better all the time. They are playing very well now and pretty much throttled ASU. I would not be surprised if they snuck up on SC.

Very very good post! We're still so far out, obviously, so a lot can happen. I see 3 tough games on the schedule, whereas I thought we have 5-6 this season in August. Then, SC and Arkansas have looked unimpressive, so I see 3 now.

It will be interesting to see how the secondary shapes up next season.

another one word - SWAMP
also consider the DB's we stand to lose this year
as well as a couple of D linemen
but no the schedule in reality doesent look that tough.

ps.
will meach still be here???????

Unless Meach has about 1200+ yards I don't see him leaving this year. At least I hope he doesn't

the only thing i really have a problem with in this post, and it's really not a problem per say, is the whole Tebow getting hit a lot...which i agree with, but as is every year, we play them on the 3rd week of the season...and that's after two patsies. it's very doubtful that Tebow will have any ill affects of defenses beating up on him in the running game at the point in the season at which we get to play them. His weekly abuse will start with TN, but unfortunately for us, it's doubtful that he will take any sort of pounding before we get to play them.

On the flip side of that, he probably won't be effective as a passer against SEC caliber defenses by the third game. I suspect he will probably start feeling the effects of the abuse by half-time. Unless Chavis is an idiot... and I know he's not... Tebow will get maximum attention everytime he crosses the LOS.

When he gets into the better defenses again this year, I expect his running effectiveness to go down. They'll have the benefit of the UT game. LSU could be a particularly ugly game for him.
