Rushing the field was dumb.

We just beat Deboer’s Alabama for the first time!
We just played Deboer’s Alabama for the first time..

This is what I came across on my Apple News feed this morning:

How much will Tennessee pay Alabama football in field rush fine? — AL.com

While Tennessee and Alabama football teams went through their typical post game formalities, the student section stood calm as “Dixieland Delight”played over the loudspeakers. On the opposite end of the stadium in the north end zone, a bunch of presumably older people were rolling over the wall and then lumbering to center field as the PA announcer demanded fans to stay off the field.

What the heck is going on?!

Well, the students did eventually follow suit and it became a prettier sight as the heavier, older fans tore down the field goal posts in much more haste than the younger students who tore down the posts two years ago. That and it’s possible the posts are made of different material than before.

What I don’t like is The University of Tennessee has to pay The University of Alabama. Alabama is still very much in the playoffs hunt (with a win over top 5 Georgia) and now they have been paid $100,000 for the second time in 3 weeks, for absolutely nothing. They did nothing to earn that payment from our school. Deboer has never even beaten Tennessee!

The next time our fans just really want to run onto the field, it’s going to cost us a lot more. It would have been nice to save $100,000 for Kirby Smart’s bulldogs or maybe even a basketball win over a #1 ranked team, someday. From here on out, our fines become a talent fee for our rivals. Only if increases significantly.

Yeah. Two years ago it made sense given the bent up frustration of 15 years of futility. I still think it’s dumb to destroy the property of your own program, but the first time was at least somewhat understandable. This time though it was just kind of dumb all around IMO. But fans are gonna do what they do 🤷‍♂️

It made sense in 2022 because the embarrassing and inexcusable drought was broken. Didn't make much sense this season, because Josh has the Vols back in business. I DO NOT REALLY CARE THOUGH, HAVE FUN AND CELEBRATE BECAUSE WE BEAT BAMA BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

everybody expected it to happen the moment Mcgrath’s kick crossed the upright in 22. But I did not see that coming yesterday. Not to mention in 22 it was a walk off field goal, but yesterday we were in victory formation which should’ve gave them time to think about how unnecessary and embarrassing it would be.

The most recent field rushing infractions were in 1998 against Spurrier’s University of Florida and in 2022 against Saban’s University of Alabama.

Where does this 2024 win against Deboer’s Alabama rank in your TN Football lore?

Yeah the field rushing has gotten out of hand. Last week LSU rushed the field against a 2-loss Ole Miss team that already lost to Kentucky. We rush the field against a 2-loss Alabama team that lost to Vandy. It used to be that you only rushed the field if you beat the #1 team in the country or a highly ranked hated rival. Now it's basically any team that's ranked higher than you. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a team that's favored to win having it's fans rush the field in the future.

This is the era of stupid is as stupid does, all across the social spectrum. And no end in sight, unfortunately.

Not sure the board will like CJH comments about fans rushing the field on the the CJH Show.

The recruits and alumni of the football program were the first on the field. When others started to come down all the on field blue shirt security guards were assisting people coming over the walls.

While there is a safety concern (that I'm sure they are trained for) must come first, if we didn't want people on the field, the blue shirts will have to have their hands up stopping people rather than assisting. The university likely makes the decision that if the field is rushed, you let it happen and assist those coming on for the safety concern.

I wouldn't be too upset at the fans, as the university leadership didn't seem to mind.

That's the thing - in 2022, as in 1982, it was pure, unmitigated joy at having done something we hadn't done in many years, a completely spontaneous reaction. Yesterday was a delayed reaction, and came off kind of calculated, as the student section (and others) saw the opportunity was there and went for it. Same with the goal posts. Just seemed like it was more about creating "viral" social media posts than anything else. Hell, I didn't even know the posts were torn down until seeing it here this morning.

I get it. People are excited (and should be) with a win against a top tier program like Alabama. Plus let's face it, the few years before Heupel have been somewhat hard against teams like Bama, Florida, and Georgia. I would absolutely love a Georgia win. All the things being said, it is going to become costly and there is the factor of player/coach/fan safety. Someone can get seriously injured when mobs rush the field. I hope they find a way to keep it under control but not diminish the joy and excitement the fanbase has because they are winning big and meaningful games.

The field rushing is probably dumb but I would much rather see our fans celebrating on our turf after a UT victory over bama instead of disappointment in the stands. Additionally, most of the younger fans storming the field haven’t seen any UT wins over the tide except for 2022. Hell, the students on campus were infants when the Vols beat bama in 2006.

Good thing we won and rushed the field. The fans who opted not to go, have to be upset about something. I’d hate to see the board had we lost and the field was intact.

Don’t watch the Dylan Sampson video with fans….they cuss. Wouldn’t want those clutching the pearls to be triggered anymore after a nice win.

Were the recruits invited on to the field? We shouldn’t have to pay for someone who could just as easily commit to Alabama as TN.
Do you think they need to verbal nationally before they storm the field?
