The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.

The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.
why I'm a fan of spending more of defense, less on offense

Don't we already spend as much as the next 10-15 countries combined? If a Russian sub is really sneaking around unknow in the gulf, might we be grossly overspending for an inferior product? Is spending more the answer?

it's not about spending more it's about shifting priorities.

ASW has been on the decline ever since the late 90's. My first squadron was a LAMPS ASW group and we were one of the last in existence.

I can certainly agree with this - but your original post says more spending.

Believe we could create a safer country and more effective military with exact same amount of spending, maybe even less....

We are working to do that every single day. One great thing about this budget crunch is that is is forcing people (at least in my corner of the world) to reevaluate the way we do business and to try and eliminate the great amount of overspending and waste that has blown up the scale of contracts. Hopefully one day we will see the benefits of more competitive contracting.

my OP also says less spending. I think it would result in a decrease if our priorities actually changed

All we need to do is pass out some 1-800-CALLSPY business cards to the guys working the oil rigs.

Interesting how conservatives claim all government is inherently bureaucratic and needs to be cut, wholesale. But then you talk military and they want to spend trillions more ....

Thought you were going to say this was Romney's fault.

Funny how Dems talk about cutting military spending and slowing down our expansive foreign policy but it never happens. This charade goes on and on and on (for both parties). At least with regard to this issue Rs are telling you they want to spend on military.

I'm conservative and I don't want more military spending. I want smarter more efficient military spending!
