I happened on this site from our own board Hogville.net Let me first say that I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. That being said, and before you go patting yourself on the back for being such a hospitable host for your home games, let me relay an experience I had at Neyland Stadium.
My family was there for the 98 game when the Stoerner fumble occurred. I say my family because my parents at the time were both 74 years old. My mother was literally crying and shaking when we finally got back to our hote. Why? Because of the rude, loud-mouth, obnoxious Vol fans that stayed in our faces the entire trip back.
So before you bad-mouth Arkansas fans and express how we should act, look in the mirror.
Our group went out of our way to greet EVERY orange-clad person that walked by our small tailgate. We offered food, drinks and any information that they might need.
I'm sure that we have some rude fans just as you do, and just as every other sports team has. I can't and won't defend them. I know that every Vol fan I visited with expressed how wonderful their trip to Fayetteville had been.
As a long time Vol fan, I have seen some of our fans be complete jerks.
I have read some negative experiences about the Fayetteville trip from other fans, but I personally had a great time. Most fans were very welcoming and good-natured. There was some good-natured ribbing before the game, but I give as well as I get.
After the game, there were some chants of "Tennessee sucks" and "Suck my Vols" (My personal favorite) but no one was ever in my face.
There are good and bad fans at every school. I am sorry that your family ran into some of the less desirable of our fan base in '98.
You guys have a good team. Bring the pain to LSU and Florida. :salute:
This is what I assumed for the most part. I seem to be in the minority of having a bad experince overall with the Arkansas fans and I am glad for that, maybe I just got the worse end of some of them. I have seen many Tennessee fans be just as bad and have been embarassed, to a point, that I follow the same team, however I always try and tell the opposing team good luck and to have a safe drive home regardless of the score. Did this for quite a few LSU fans after that game, even as upset as I was.You have to understand the situation for Arkansas fans to understand the way some of them are acting right now. Hog fans have been very frustrated for a while.
Fans have been hungry for this! As we get back to our expected winning tradition, the fans will calm down and act like we used to in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
I don't doubt the Hogs one bit and hope they do bring a consistent top tier team to the SEC every year, whether Tennessee plays them or not. SEC needs to be well represented across the board. :good!:Other teams should not fear or doubt the HOGs resurgance but welcome it because it will make the conference even stronger.
You have to understand the situation for Arkansas fans to understand the way some of them are acting right now. Hog fans have been very frustrated for a while. While many of the "Top Tier Team" fans see Arkansas as a step child, Arkansas in fact has a very, very rich tradition. We are not South Carolina! We have had a very difficult time getting our consistent footing since joining the SEC. The Hogs have many, many top 20 finishes in the past forty years, including one NC in the 60's and a #1 finish in the coaches poll in the late 70's. While Tenn has the winning record over us since we joined the SEC, Saturday was easily the most lopsided win for either team in the recent series.
Fans have been hungry for this! As we get back to our expected winning tradition, the fans will calm down and act like we used to in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Arkansas WILL become a consistent top tier team in the SEC. Remember that our program was under the threat of an NCAA investigation for five years. Because of this, many of the players who should be at ARK are at Texas and Oklahoma because they used the investigation against us in recruiting. Our natural recruiting base is OK and TX and joining the SEC hurt us in the short term.
Other teams should not fear or doubt the HOGs resurgance but welcome it because it will make the conference even stronger.
As a last point, when Razorback Stadium was expanded a few years ago it was designed with the option of closing in the north end when needed. The talk is heating up that we are almost there now. ARK is already a tough place to play. Imagine it with 95,000 screaming red shirts.
